Wind Erosion It is the detachment ,transportation and deposition of soil particles by wind. Or Removal of soil particles by the action of air and deposition on another place.
Mechanism of Wind Erosion • Saltation :Lifting and bouncing of a particle, most important for particles 0.1-0.5 mm diameter. • Surface Creep: Coarse and very coarse sand grains rolled on ground surface. • Suspension :Lifting of silt and clay sized particles (Greater than 0.1 mm )high into the air and can thus be carried long distances.
Factors Affecting Wind Erosion • Moisture content of soil • Wind velocity. • Wind turbulence. • Surface roughness. • Soil properties. • Vegetation.
Wind Erosion Equation (WEQ) E = f (I,C,K,L,V) I is the soil credibility by wind. C is the local wind erosion climatic factor. K is the soil surface roughness. L is the unprotected width of the field. V is the vegetative cover factor.
Forms Of Wind Erosion • Detrusion • Effluxion • Extrusion • Efflation • Abrasion
Damages of Wind Erosion • Losing topsoil has a direct effect on the productivity of land .A loss of 2.5 cm of soil can reduce Wheat yields by 5_10% while a loss of 20 cm can reduce yields to 1/3 of the previous levels. • Soil productivity decreases due to a decrease in top soil ,soil fertility becomes less. • Organic matter is reduced. • Dissemination of weeds. • Cover the plants and seed during deposition. • Effect on working machinery.
The Areas Affected By Wind Erosion. • Thal • Cholistan • Mianwali • Muzaffargarh • Thar • Dera Ghazi Khan
