Struggle for Independence • There were numerous attempts to gain independence that failed. • 1898 Jose Rizal, the Philippine National Hero is killed by Spanish soldiers. • His book Noli me Tangre was a rallying cry for independence.
American Occupation • 1899 Spanish-American War ends with the Treaty of Paris—The Philippines was “given” to the U.S. as a territory as a result of the peace treaty. • 1900-1902 The Philippine American War.
American Occupation • Emilio Aguinaldo, leader of Philippine rebels is captured. William Howard Taft becomes governor of the Philippines.

Philippine Timeline • 1953-57: Ramon Magsaysay serves as President of the Philippines. His administration is tragically cut short when he is killed in a plane crash.
The Marcos Era • In 1965 Ferdinand Marcos is elected President. He promises to end corruption, but instead brings about more corruption (along with his wife Imelda)
In the 1970’s Ninoy Aquino opposed Marcos. Aquino was sent out of the country for several years. • When he returned in 1983 he was assassinated. Marcos was suspected.
The Revolution • In February 1986--Corazon “Cory” Aquino, Ninoy’s widow, runs and defeats Marcos in a special presidential election. • Marcos refuses to give up power and the “People’s Power” Revolution ensues.
Feb 1986, Cory Aquino is put into power as the “People Power” revolution unfolds.
1991 Mount Pinatubo erupts causing much devastation in Central Luzon.
In 1992 Fidel Ramos is elected President of the Philippines. Ramos had helped Cory Aquino against Marcos in 1986
In fall of 1992 Subic Bay Naval Base is turned over to the Philippines by the United States. This ends U.S. military occupation in the Philippines.
In 1998 Joseph Estrada is elected President of the Philippines. Estrada was a former movie actor who was corrupt while president. He held several mistresses and was not a good president. • 2000 Estrada impeached for corruption • 2001 Estrada steps down
