  2. Long Division • Long division is as simple as memorizing this saying Does McDonalds Sell Cheese Burgers Roy?

  3. Long Division • Each word represents a step in the long division process. • 1. Does = Divide • 2. McDonalds= Multiply • 3. Sell= Subtract • 4. Cheese= Check to make sure your answer works. • 5. Burgers= Bring down • 6. Roy = Repeat or Remainder

  4. Step 1 in Long Division 4 1. Divide • Divide 2 into first number in the dividend. 2 ) 9 4 7 Does Two times what gives me a number close to 9? • Think “2 times what gives me a number close to 9?” • . Write that number directly above the number you divided into.

  5. Step 2 in Long Division 4 2. Multiply • Multiply the divisor times the first number in the quotient. 2 ) 9 4 7 McDonalds 8 2 x 4 = 8 • Write your answer directly under the 9 or the number you just divided into.

  6. Step 3 in Long Division 4 3. Subtract • Draw a line under the 8. 2 ) 9 4 7 Sell 8 • Write a subtraction sign next to the 8. 1 • Subtract 8 from 9. • Write your answer directly below the 8.

  7. Step 4 in long division 4 • Check Cheese Make sure the answer you got when you subtracted is not bigger that the divisor. 2 ) 9 4 7 8 1 One is smaller than 2, so I must have the correct number in my quotient

  8. Step 4 in Long Division 4 5. Bring down • Go to the next number in the dividend to the right of the 9. 2 ) 9 4 7 Burgers 8 1 4 • Write an arrow under the 4. • Bring the 4 down next to the 1. • Note, you can only bring down 1 number before having to divide and put a number in the quotient.

Repeat or Remainder • This is where you decide whether you repeat the 5 steps of division. 2 ) 9 4 7 Roy 8 1 4 • If your divisor can divide into your new number, 14, or if you have numbers in the dividend that have not been brought down, you repeat the 5 steps of division.

  12. Step 3 in Long Division 4 7 3. Subtract • Draw a line under the bottom 14. 2 ) 9 4 7 Sell 8 1 4 • Draw a subtraction sign. 1 4 • Subtract & place answer under the line. 0

  13. Step 4 • Check to make sure the answer to the subtraction problem is not greater than the divisor. 47 2 ) 9 4 7 8 1 4 1 4 0

  14. Step 5 in Long Division 4 7 5. Bring down • Put an arrow under • the next number, 7, • in the dividend. 2 ) 9 4 7 Burgers 8 1 4 1 4 • Bring the 7 down next to the 0. 0 7

  15. Step 6 in Long Division 4 7 6. Repeat or Remainder • If the 2 will divide into your new number, 7, then repeat the steps of division. 2 ) 9 4 7 Roy 8 1 4 1 4 0 7

  19. Step 4 in Long Division 4 7 3 4. Check 2 ) 9 4 7 • Make sure the answer to your subtraction problem is not greater than the divisor (the 2 in this problem) 8 Cheese 1 4 1 4 0 7 6 1

  20. Step 5 in Long Division 4 7 3 5. Bring down 2 ) 9 4 7 • Look at your dividend to see if there are any more numbers to bring down. 8 Burgers 1 4 1 4 0 7 6 • If not, move to step 5. 1

  21. Step 5 in Long Division 4 7 3 R1 5. Repeat or Remainder 2 ) 9 4 7 • Since there are no more numbers to bring down & 2 will not divide into 1, you do not repeat the steps of division. 8 Roy 1 4 1 4 0 7 6 1 • The number left over, 1, becomes the remainder.
