  1. Egypt is located in the northeast corner of Africa, could you name: • a neighbouring country • a famous river • the capital city • one colour on the flag • one historic monument Praying for Egypt

  2. Praying for Egypt If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.  - John 14:14

  3. Geography Land area: 997,739 sqkm Mostly desert; only 3% is arable land – along the banks and delta of the Nile River and around the Western Desert oases. Population: 99,551,072 Capital: Cairo Official language: Arabic Languages:27

  4. Egypt is often known by the world for its ancient pyramids, and the Biblical story of the deliverance of the Israelites. Egypt remains the most populous country in the Arab world and holds great regional and global influence. Egypt was no exception to the effects of the Arab Spring of 2011, leading to the ousting of then President Hosni Mubarak. In addition to the water crisis, forced labour and sex trafficking leaves street children especially vulnerable.

  5. A terrorised nation Following the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, militants linked to the Islamic State (IS) led an insurgency, bringing widespread terror and the tragic deaths of thousands. Political unrest has inhibited the nation from addressing economic problems, corruption, and strained resources (water crisis).

  6. Religion Largest Religion: Muslim

  7. Evangelical Christianity is on the rise, and even as persecution increases, so does the number of Muslims turning to Christ!  Egypt was a majority-Christian nation for over 1,000 years, and today it remains home to the Middle East’s largest body of Christians - the Coptic Church (12%). Scripture is more accessible than ever, and the Church is growing in unity across theological differences.

  8. THE ECONOMY Most economic activity takes place in the highly fertile Nile Valley. Despite sporadic terrorist attacks, the vital tourism industry has rebounded, but economic growth continues to lag, and Cairo has become more dependent on aid from Saudi Arabia and international financial institutions. Unemployment: 12.1% Poverty rate: 33% of Egypt’s 99m people were classified as poor in 2018, up from 28% in 2015. 60% of Egyptians are “either poor or vulnerable”.

  9. CHALLENGES TO PRAYER • The Coptic Church is by far the largest body of Christians in the Middle East and is a strategic key for the evangelization of the region. • Church leaders - Wisdom, grace and confidence are needed in handling the Muslim authorities, Islamist persecution and the questioning world. • A spiritual awakening Church-wide in the midst of mounting pressures and communal tensions.

  10. Prayer points • Pray for a stable and trustworthy government to act in the interest of all its people. • Pray for the Church to continue to overcome evil with divine forgiveness and love. • Pray for Jesus to reveal Himself to an unprecedented number of Muslims disillusioned by Islamic State. • Christians’ influence in business, the professions and health services.  • Pray that MBBs may be uplifted and strengthened through the love of Christ.
