Birds of Prey Vocabulary
Bird of prey • a bird, such as an eagle or a hawk, that kills and eats small birds and animals • Prey: an animal that is hunted and killed for food by another animal
scavenger • a bird or animal which feeds on dead animals which it has not killed itself • Carrion: dead meat
More words • Perch: Where a bird sits • Raptor : another word for bird of prey • Nocturnal: active at night like an owl • Extinct: a species or type of animal dies out
Expressions • eagle eye (noun) If someone has an eagle eye, they notice everything, even very small details. We sat down and started the exam under the eagle eye of the teacher. • eagle-eyed (adjective) My eagle-eyed mother noticed that some cakes had gone missing.
swoop • to move very quickly and easily through the air, especially down from a height in order to attack The eagle swooped down to snatch a young rabbit • The peregrine falcon swoops at over 180mph
