  1. The Compare and Contrast Essay Point By Point

  2. How do we Compare and Contrast? • Watch the following video about comparing and contrasting two stories. What is the first step to comparing and contrasting? Why do you think this step is so important?

  3. Canada vs. America • Create a Venn Diagram in your notes. • Watch the following video that compares Canada and the United States. • Fill in your Venn Diagram with what you hear. Be prepared to share with your group.

  4. Writing a Compare And Contrast Essay Step 1: Choose a topic (two things to compare to one another) • They cannot be too different or too much the same or the comparison will not work. That’s why we compared two differnet books by the same author and Canada and America. • Imagine if we compare a Dr. Seuss book to The Bible. Obviously this comparison would not work well. Or if we compared Germany to Vanuatu (Google Vanuatu – Where is it? Tell me a few facts about it!) vs

  5. Step 2: Venn Diagram Create a Venn Diagram and fill in the similarities and differences. Focus on finding three big points of comparison and on making a judgment about what you are comparing. You MUST favor one over another. You will find things to compare, but using those things you find, you must decide which is better.

  6. Point by Point Method Definition: a comparison of one point of a topic with a point of the other topic. Example: Topic – Food at Starbucks vs. 7-11 food Points to Compare: Health, Taste, Cost, Quality. Thesis: Although Starbucks’ food is more costly, it is healthier and tastes better than 7-11’s food. OR Starbucks has more expensive, healthier and better quality food than 7-11.

  7. Advantages to the Point by Point Comparison Essay: • Keeps each set of points for discussion close together. • The reader does not have to remember as much information. • Keeps the paper clearly organized. • Avoids summary

  8. Disadvantages to the Point by Point Comparison Essay: • Can appear mechanical and monotonous. • Does not provide a unified discussion of the two sides.

  9. Compare and Contrast Paragraph Example • People should own boxers and underwear. When wearing boxers under pants, the boxers bunch up in different places, forming little hills out of the pants. When wearing underwear under pants, they do not bunch up, leaving the pants smooth. Boxers come up high on the waist, so people can see them above the pants unless the shirt is tucked in, but underwear do not come up high on the waist, so no one can see them above the pants. However, boxers can be worn without any clothes on top, but this can not be done with underwear. Wearing boxers without any pants on is very comfortable. Underwear is very comfortable with pants on. Because of the advantages and disadvantages of each, people should own both boxers and underwear.
