We are honored and privileged to have some celebrities in our classroom: Josh Boo... Mike Hustler... And The young Jeff Lebowski. They like to inhabit the back row And put on a show For the other students in the class... Our Exceptional Students
Josh:Strengths: Josh is extremely outgoing and likes to be the center of attention. His listening and speaking skills are excellent, as are his cognitive abilities overall. He is very social. Challenges: He has difficulty with fine motor control, particularly his arms – writing is a challenge and is mostly done with assistive technology. His attention span is limited when he is not the center of attention. Mike:Strengths: Mike is highly creative – plays bass in the school band and displays a high level of empathy and care for his fellow students. Challenges: Mike has been diagnosed with mild ADHD. Also, he periodically has a narcoleptic seizure which is harmless, but renders him unconscious for an unknown period of time (2-8 hours typically). Mike is Bi-sexually oriented and at risk from school bullies. He is in and out of the streetlink shelter downtown and complains about his stepfather, whom he lives with otherwise (may be physically abusive monitor carefully). Jeffrey:Jeffrey is also challenged at home, though not with the difficulties that Mike is facing. Jeffrey has mild LD, which may be related to his ongoing use of alcohol (White Russians) and cannabis. He often runs away from his mother (Maude) to spend time with his father, who is a compulsive bowler. Strengths: His sense of humor is unmatched – often has the whole class (including teacher) laughing. He is very perceptive and sociable. Challenges: Cognitive abilities seem slow in all areas, particularly reading. Extra time for completing assignments and appropriate scaffolding is necessary for Jeff. RYU:Strengths: This may be the hardest working ESL student ever. His progress is remarkable – but he does require tiered vocabulary, tutoring, and extra time for completing assignments (todays lesson will be of assistance to his ongoing challenge of reading the novel “Good Omens”. This is a grade 12 English (ELA) class of 27 students. The class is mainly composed of middle class caucasian students with 2 Korean immigrants (not considered ESL students as fluency level is high) and one young African American lass. There is also one Japanese student named Ryu who is considered an ESL student. Ryu is quiet and doesn't like to be the center of attention. He is highly intelligent and making excellent progress with English. He is very distracted right now about the situation in Fukushima and has missed several classes – providing extra time at lunch/after school for him may be necessary. Regarding Class Composition
Today's lesson is a vocabulary builder and technology exercise. We will be using the school computer lab to access Yahoo Texttwist: http://games.yahoo.com/game/text-twist This is one of the best word games and vocabulary builders we've ever seen – it's highly 'addictive' and a lot of FUN to play. Scaffolding game play won't take long, and the closing exit slip is a list of definitions for words from our current text (Good Omens, by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett) and some from the texttwist game. A 50/50 list of new words defined and used in a sentence context. Work will be done in groups of 3-4 (per computer – dictionaries provided). Today's Tiered Lesson and PLOs.

You can adapt this method to whatever material is in your lesson for the day – it's most effective used at beginning+end of classes. A very simple, yet Brilliant, effective mnemonic!!
