  2. Recognition vs. Recall • Recognition: identifying objects or events that have been encountered before (multiple choice test) • Recall: bringing it back to your conscious mind (essay test) • Harry Bahrick: the ability to recognize familiar faces remains strong & lasting

  3. Amnesia • Severe memory loss caused by brain injuries, shock, fatigue, illness or repression • Dissociative Amnesia: caused by severe psychological trauma • Infantile Amnesia: inability to remember events that occurred during one’s early years (before age 3)

  4. Amnesia • Anterograde Amnesia: inability to form new memories because of a brain trauma • Retrograde Amnesia: the failure to remember events that occurred prior to physical trauma
