What is AVID • Advancement Via Individual Determination • Founded in 1980 by Mary Catherine Swanson with 32 students in San Diego • AVID now impacts more than • 1.2 million students • 5,000 schools • 43 postsecondary institutions • 44 states and the District of Columbia • 16 other countries/territories. • The AVID College Readiness System spans elementary through higher education. • Elective Class

AVID at MCHS San Bernardino • ALL Middle College students are enrolled in the AVID Elective • 8 College tutors serve our students • College tutors are paid through SBCUSD LCAP funds • Tutors are available after school until 4 PM Monday – Thursday to support our students • AVID Curriculum is followed

  5. College Readiness • AVID promotes college readiness by scaffolding skills throughout the curriculum • Students get assistance in • Identifying strengths and learning styles • Career exploration • College requirements • College admission testing • College applications • Scholarships • Etc!

  9. Tutorials • Twice weekly • College Tutors are facilitators • Follow AVID Tutorial Process • Tutorial Request Form (TRF) • Grouping (5-7 students, 1 tutor) • 30 second speech • Group questioning • Note taking • Repeat
