  1. Sustainable • To live in a way that does not waste natural resources or harm the environment

  2. Greenhouse gases • The three mains Greenhouse Gases are carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide • Greenhouse gases warm up the planet heat and not being released through the earth’s atmosphere therefore remaining trapped

  3. Co2 Emission • Co2 is the scientific word for carbon dixoxide • When petrol or diesel burns in an engine carbon dioxide gas (Co2) is produced • Co2 gases are key contributor to global warming

  4. Methane • Methane is a greenhouse gas • Methane is a colourless, odourless and tasteless • It’s 21x more dangerous to the environment than CO2 because of how much heat it traps

  5. Deforestation • Deforestation is the clearing of forests and wildlife to use land for non-forest use • Palm oil production, animal rearing and fuel are key causes of deforestation • It casuses greenhouse gases and animal • extinction

  6. Palm oil • Palm oil is oil extracted from the fruit of palm trees • It is a major cause of deforestation • It is a very cheap oil and very unhealthy • Some 50% of our processed foods now • contain palm oil

  7. Fracking • Water, sand and chemicals are injected into rock at high pressure which allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well • It destroys wildlife and can cause • earthquakes

  8. Ocean Dead Zone • Ocean Dead zones are parts of ocean that are low in oxygen because of high pollution levels • Sea life can’t live there

  9. Line caught fish • Fish caught using a fishing line instead of being trawled • This reduces by-catch (catching of fish in nets that die • and get thrown back in unused

  10. Entomophagy • The eating of insects by humans

  11. Use-by date • Food with a use by date needs to be eaten by this date • Foods such as meat and dairy can make us ill if we eat them • after their use by date • These foods are known as perishables

  12. Best before date • Food with a best before date can be eaten after this date • (a general rule of thumb is up to 3 months) • Foods like pasta, rice, biscuits and cereal will all have a best • before date on the packet • You will not become ill from eating these foods – they may • just taste a little stale or have lost their • flavour
