  3. School Counselors… • Advocate for students • Help solve problems with peers • Help with academic planning • Teach you study skills • Help you learn coping skills • Teach you about decision making

  4. School Counselors… • Teach you social skills • Help you understand yourself and others • Help you solve problems • Help you explore career interests for the future • Help with personal problems or conflictsthat can affect your attitude and performance at school • Help during a crisis

  5. School Counselors… • Help you learn about diversity • Help you with setting goals • Help you find your strengths and weaknesses • Write curriculum • Teach class lessons • Help plan transitions

  6. When do you see a school counselor? • When you have good news to share • When you’re having trouble with friends • When you have trouble with schoolwork • When you have problems getting along with people • When you need to talk to someone

  7. School Counselors also work with: • Parents • Teachers • Administrators • People in the community

  8. School Counselors work with parents: To provide information To support communication About academic planning To provide parent/family education In conferences To help find community resources for counseling To help parents help students

  9. School Counselors work with teachers by: Helping to figure out student needs Providing classroom guidance lessons Helping to figure out students’ learning styles Identifying students who need more support Assisting with interventions to help students be successful

  10. School Counselors work with administrators to: Help school feel safe Figure out needs of students Develop plans to help students succeed Develop programs and lessons to teach students about their resources in school

School Counselors work with the community to: Provide support groups Provide education to parents about adolescent issues Set up meetings outside of school to help students connect with helpful people Make sure students are safe at home and at school Provide information on the role of school counselors in the community
