  1. Writing in math • Chief Joseph PLCT December 2012 1

  2. Entry Task: Compare the following test items with a partner: • 4/5 ____5/4 • < • > • = 5/4 is greater than 4/5. Explain with pictures, numbers or words why this statement is true. 2

  3. released items from smarter balanced • Review test item with grade level partners. In order to complete this problem what would students… • have to know ? • have to think about? • have to do to ? • Share whole group to look for common threads. 3

  4. Types of Writing in Math • Keeping Journals or Logs • Solving Problems • Explain Mathematical Ideas • Creative Writing • General Writing 4

  5. Sample- Journals and Logs 5

  6. Journals and logs • These provide a place for students to keep ongoing records about what they are doing and learning in math. • Three guidelines for reflective math journaling. • Write about what you did • Write about what you learned • Write about what you’re not sure about or wondering about Writing Type -Journals and Logs 6

  7. Completion thinking frames • Use sentence frames for analytic thinking • Add justification where appropriate. • Focus on: • Part to whole relationships and whole to part • Similarities and Differences • Compare and contrast • Cause and effect • Justify, cite reason, specify how you arrived at that thought or conclusion Writing Strategy- Journals and Logs 7

  8. When__________, then__________________ • When you know the formula for area of a square, (Area of a square = b x h) • then you can use that to find the formula for area of a triangle. • I know this because I cut my square in half to make 2 equal triangles. Each of my triangles is half the original area. So the formula would be • Area of a triangle = ½ b x h 8

  9. Improving critical thinking through quick writes 9

  10. Sample Quick Writes • Which two of these multiple choice answers are wrong and why? • Which was the most challenging problem on your homework? Why? How did you solve it? • What is one strategy you use to help you understand_______________ and why does it work for you? • Compare these two problems (items, numbers). What is the same and different? • Write a note to yourself on your homework. What is one thing you’ll need to remember as you are solving? • Choose a “good” quick write to share with all. 10

  11. Solving math problems • “Problem solving is the process by which students experience the power and usefulness of mathematics in the world around them” 11

  12. Divide 21 balloons among 4 people • Divide 21 cookies among 4 people • Divide $21 among 4 people • Divide 21 by 4 on a calculator Solving Problems 12

  13. Explain mathematical ideas • More than just one problem or idea • Big picture piece- specific mathematical concept • Great for assessing understanding • Presents a view into student thinking 13

  14. After playing a variety of games and defining chance and strategy, students analyzed the games they played. Explain Mathematical Ideas 14

  15. Short constructed response • ABC Protocol • A = Address the • prompt • B= Back it up • C = Conclude your • thinking 15

  16. Creative writing • Apply writing strengths to math • Fresh approach can give them new ideas • Broaden their view of math 16

  17. Creative Writing 17

  18. General writing • Building rationale • Increasing perseverance • Building trusting community relationships 18

  19. General Writing 19

  20. Content Area Writing • How will doing writing in the content area of math help students be successful math thinkers? • How will it help them be successful test takers? • For next time…bring a sample of your student’s mathematical writing 20
