This project encompasses multiple stages aimed at integrating GIS and GPS into high school curricula, focusing on environmental science through the lens of the Everglades ecosystem. Students, guided by peer trainers, learn essential GIS skills using software tools like Google Earth and My World. Key activities include virtual explorations and real-world data collection, fostering collaboration between Earth Science, Biology, and Chemistry teachers. The initiative emphasizes hands-on learning, critical thinking, and application of technology in understanding ecological concepts.

Project Stages 1. Preparation 2. Intro to GPS/GIS and Everglades 3. Google Earth 4. Inquiry into My World 5. A Matter of Inches
Preparation • Vertical planning between Earth Science, Biology and Chemistry teachers at FVSH. • Software/hardware logistics: receipt of licenses, installation in computer lab within the Media Center and set calendar for use of computer lab. • Student trainers selected and prepared for their role within the project.
Introduction to GPS/GIS • Lecture on GPS and GIS basicsSlide show of summer Everglades GIS field trip and data collection using GLX units from Pasco • Prepared a review of icons used in GIS: My World software.
Introduction to the Everglades Video: “Everglades Secrets of the Swamp” from National Geographic Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research Website at: http://fcelter.fiu.edu/
Computer Lab Intro. to Google Earth • My World was not installed in all the student computers (image erased). • Google Earth was used to introduce basic GIS skills: navigation, flying , marking places and layering. • Students located latitude and longitude of their home, the school, landmarks in the city the state and the boundaries of the Everglades area.
“Inquiry Lesson into My World” • My World license key had to be typed into each computer. • Data files were not all loaded. Structured Lesson Inquiry Lesson • Students learned basic navigation and manipulation of action tabs on My World • Practiced the retrieval and loading of data files from the library to create layers. • Explored different types of maps available. • Shared maps with class mates.
Coastlines Activity “A Matter of Inches” Project participation: 5 groups of Honors/Gifted Chemistry students totaling 150 Students and 12 GIS student trainers
