  2. What is RADD? RADD is a strategy designed to help students respond to questions about reading. Each letter stands for a required part of their answer.

  3. What are the required elements? R stands for restate. Astands for answer. Dstands for detail. D stands for detail.

  5. Here’s a sample prompt. Based on Charlie’s speech, what can you infer about Charlie? Explain. (Act 1, lines 96-98)

  6. Level One Answer He is confused. • Avoid using pronouns. • Be specific and use names. Only the first part of the prompt is answered in a very general way.

  7. Level Two Answer Charlie knows a lot about the weather. This is a good start, but only the first part of the question was answered. Based on Charlie’s speech, what can you infer about Charlie? Explain.

  8. Level Three Answer Based on Charlie’s speech, I can infer that he knows a lot about weather. I can infer that because he uses facts about weather to back up what he believes. Restate: Using part of the prompt in the answer helps us to focus on a main point. This is a more complete answer, but the details are too general.

  9. Level Four Answer Based on Charlie’s speech, I can infer that Charlie knows a lot about weather because he uses facts to back up what he believes. For example, he says “That doesn’t seem likely. . . Not a cloud. No lightning. No thunder. How could it be a storm (Act 1 lines 96-98)?” The story details are very specific and match the inference.

Looking up at the sky as if . . . as if he were waiting for something(Act 1, lines 350-359).” I also know from my own knowledge that people who look up at the sky often are thinking of aliens.
