  2. Background Info. • Born in Grand Chute, Wisconsin • Graduated from Marquette in 1935 • 1939 won election as a circuit court judge • During WWII joined the Marines and served in the Pacific

  3. General Info. • U.S. Republican Senator from Wisconsin • Gained power when the Republican Party won control of the Senate in 1952

  4. McCarthyism • Gained national attention in 1950 by claiming that he had a list of 205 known communists in the State Department • “Use of accusations, slander, and innuendo to tarnish his opponents’ reputations.”

  5. Hollywood Ten • Alvah Bessie, Herbert Biberman, Lester Cole, Edward Dmytryk, and others, all entertainers in the film industry • HUAC (House of Un- American Activities Committee) investigated the film industry. • They refused to answer questions and plead the fifth.

  6. Results of His Actions • McCarthy overstepped himself by challenging the United States Army when one of his assistants was drafted. • Many Americans saw McCarthy’s savage tactics for the first time. • The Senate finally condemned him for his conduct.
