Richard Lawrence McCarthy, known as Darby McCarthy, rose to prominence as one of Australia's top jockeys in the 1950s and 60s. He achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the 1969 AJC Derby on "Divide and Rule" and the Epsom on the same day with "Brokers Tip." His racing career took him to Europe, competing at prestigious venues like Royal Ascot and in Paris. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, he was inducted into the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame during the Industry Awards Night in Brisbane in July 2004.

  2. Early life 1. He was born Richard Lawrence McCarthy. 2. His mother married at 13. 3. He became one of Australia's best jockeys in the 1950s and '60s.

  3. IMPORTANT ACHIEVMENTS He won the 1969 AJC derby on divide And Rule and the Epsom with Brokers tip on the same day.

  4. Interesting facts 1. McCarthy then went on to race in Europe, including at Royal Ascot and in Paris. He was inducted into the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame during the Industry Awards Night held in Brisbane, July 2004.[2]
