  4. Models Count the stars, how many do you see? Let us count together the circles as they appear!! How many are there? 4 or you can write it as four 16 or SIXTEEN Now let us try counting higher!! How about we count the ice cream flavors that Ben and Jerry's offers!!!flavors Now try this on your own… How Many fingers do you have? 10 or TEN How many? 63 or sixty-three

  5. Place Value The number system that we use is the Hindu-Arabic Numeration system. This system counts in the Base of 10 and each number has an important place value that it holds. 15 Now lets break the number 15 apart And we will have 1 and 5. In math the five is in the ones place and represents 5 ones Ex: each of these blocks equals 1 so now we have 5 of them Now we also have a 1 in the number 15 and it is in the tens place.   6. Grouping GROUPS OF 2 + = + + = 1 + 1 = 2 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 Groups of 5 + + = 5 + 5 + 5 = 15 Groups of 10 = 1 group of 10 = 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 40

  7. Single Digit Addition Try these simple addition problems and use the tally marks underneath each problem for help!   8. Solving Word Problems(draw pictures to help) 1. Gabriel went to a car dealership. Before talking to the salesperson, he looked at 1 pickup truck. After talking to a salesperson, he looked at 4 more pickup trucks. How many pickup trucks did he look at in all? 1 + 4 = 5 + = 2. Tanner went shopping for Father's Day and bought 2 solid black shirts and 1 green striped shirt. How many shirts did he buy in all? Write an addition sentence that fits the story: 2+ 1= 3 + = 3. The snack bar sold 1 soda, 2 bottles of water, and 4 cups of coffee. How many beverages did the snack bar sell in all? 1+2+4= 7 + + =

Can you make a group of 2, 5 and 10 on your paper using tally marks? FEEDBACK 4. In the number 37, what are the place values of the 3 and 7? FEED BACKfor right and wrong answers COUNTING • Right- Refer to the table Wrong- If you messed up in your counting, writing the numbers down could help you, make a table like the one we have used! 2. Right- 12 Wrong- Make groups of 2 to help you organize the shapes when counting using tally marks Ex: II IIIIIIIIII 2 4 6 8 10 12 Or you can draw them out and make part of the number table to help you count correctly…Remember if you need help then DRAW A PICTURE!! • Right- Groups of 2- II Groups of 5- IIIII Groups of 10- IIIII IIIII Wrong- Most likely you got the group of 5 or/and 10 wrong. If you did then here are some other ways to look at this…make a simple addition problem using tally's Ex: II+III=IIIII 2+3=5 Ex: IIIII+IIIII=IIIII IIIII (break the ten’s group down into 2 sets of five!)
