  2. FRANCIS BACON(1561-1626) Francis bacon was a revolutionary figure in constitutional law, science and philosophy. He was born on January 22,1561 in London, England. At the age of 12, he went to trinity college to practice Law. The year 1597 marked Bacon’s first publication, a collection of essays about politics. The collection was later expanded and republished in 1612 and 1625

  4. USES Bacon classifies the uses of studies under three heads, • Delight (studies are a source of pleasure) • Ornament ( studies have an ornamental value) • Ability (studies widely develop one’s ability)

  5. models Bacon addressing the effects of reading, conversing and writing, • Reading maketh a full man (Creates a well-rounded man) • Conference a ready man (Conversation makes a man think quickly) • Writing an exact man ( Equip to think and write logically)

  6. methods Books are generally three types, • Some books are to be tasted. (People make Judgment solely on acquired books) • Others to be swallowed ( people who read only not by curious) • Some few to be chewed and digested (True scholars would filter information acquired from books and apply it to their own experience)

  7. approaches According to Bacon, • Crafty men condemn studies ( Dishonest men condemn education) • Simple men admire them ( Stupid men admire education ) • Wise men use them ( Knowledge men use education in their real world experience)

  8. merits Bacon remarks that books are specifically useful for curing the mental illness as physical exercises cure bodily defects and he advises that every defect of the mind cured by another form of study. • History makes man wise • Poetry makes witty • Mathematics sharpens intellectual besides making men subtle

  9. demerits According to Bacon, studies have some drawbacks in human life. • Read for estimating the value of the content of books not for aims • Studies not be made for showy purposes or arguments • Theoretical knowledge does not have any bearing in human life.
