Opener Monday 11-4-13 • Overarching Question: What were the Congress of Vienna and Concert of Europe reactions to? • Review: What are the main differences between the Congress of Vienna and the Concert of Europe? • Pg. 240: Evaluate the two maps at the top and answer the two questions below them. • What is the difference between nationality, race and ethnicity?

Congress of Vienna: 1815 • Goals: achieve long-lasting peace after Napoleon’s reign over Europe, create security and stability over the entire continent, surround France with strong countries, restore European royal families (legitimacy), balance the national powers in Europe, no major punishment to France • Met for 8 total months • “Great Powers” included Russia, Prussia, Austria, Great Britain and France • Austria’s Prince Metternich was the most influential. • One of the most successful peace meetings in history. • Peace was created in Europe for over 40 years. • Concert of Europe: 1815 • Creation of political alliances – nations would aid others • Motivated by fear of possible revolutions elsewhere in Europe. • Disagreed with the ideas of the FR: liberty, equality and fraternity • Inspired by the Holy Alliance: pledge to combat ideas of the FR using Christian principles Congress of Vienna Same Concert of Europe • Both • Led by Prince Klemens von Metternich • Influenced European politics for 100 years • Diminished power of France but did not exclude France • Nationalism was at the core of all decisions
