  2. AA.12 - Transform powers with negative exponents into positive exponents The story: How Ashley and Javier’s understanding of this concept will help solve this past Regents problem:

  3. Thursday, October 31, 2013 Ashley said: “I don’t know how to do problems when they have negative exponents.” Ms. Wang responded, “You mean a question like this?” Ashley replied, “No, I know this. It’s hard when they have variables like x.”

  4. Ashley understands how to transform negative exponents into positive exponents when there are only numbers. When there is a NEGATIVE exponent Rewrite with a POSITIVE exponent 1 1

  5. Wait!? Then what happens when the power has variables?Ashley asked, “What number is x?”

  6. Javier came to rescue! Javier commented, “x is a variable. It can be any number. It didn’t say. So it’s just x.” When there is a NEGATIVE exponent Rewrite with a POSITIVE exponent

  7. Ashley & Javier’s Rule - Keep the parts with positive exponents on top (called the numerator). 2 - Write the parts with negative exponents on the bottom (called the denominator). x2 1

Recall Ashley and Javier’s Rule When with NEGATIVE exponent Rewrite with POSITIVE exponent 1 - Write the part with positive exponent on the top (numerator). - Write the part with negative exponent on the bottom denominator. 2. Ashley and Javier were being resourceful, when they seek out each other’s help to solve the challenge.
