  1. Using MERLOT in Teaching Math, Physics and Engineering Edward H. Perry Professor of Mechanical Engineering The University of Memphis eperry@memphis.edu MIC 2005 July 28 Nashville, TN

  2. Types of MERLOT Learning Materials Simulation: Approximates a real or imaginary experience where users' actions affect their outcomes. Users specify initial conditions that generate output dependent on those conditions. Animation: Allows users to view the dynamic and visual representation of concepts, models, processes, and/or phenomena in space or time. Users cannot specify the initial conditions or the resulting outcomes. • Tutorial • Drill and Practice • Quiz/Test • Lecture/Presentation • Case Study • Collection • Reference Material

  3. What does MERLOT offer the Engineering Educator? • A collection of over 350 learning materials, many with peer reviews, user comments, and sample assignments - in many areas of engineering.

  4. The MERLOT Engineering Portal(a very good place to start)http://taste.merlot.org/portal/engineering/

  5. Using Online Learning Objects in Engineering • Mechanical Engineering • Aeronautical Engineering • Aerospace Engineering • Civil Engineering • Electrical Engineering

  6. Mechanical Engineering: Thermodynamics • Steam Tables Calculator Steam tables, Mollier charthttp://www.mathpad.com/ • Thermal Power Plant Micro Module Animations and Simulations of Power Cycleshttp://www.engr.usask.ca/classes/ME/227/rankine/cycles/rankine2/rankine2.html

  7. Thermal Power Plant Micro Module - Animation http://www.engr.usask.ca/classes/ME/227/rankine/cycles/rankine2/rankine2.html

  8. Thermal Power Plant Micro Module – Simulationhttp://www.engr.usask.ca/classes/ME/227/rankine/applet/rc.html

  9. Aeronautical Engineering: Wing DesignFoilSim II (Airfoil Simulation)http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/foil2.html

  10. Aerospace Engineering: Convergent-Divergent Nozzlehttp://www.engapplets.vt.edu/fluids/CDnozzle/index.html

  11. Electrical Engineering: SemiconductorsSemiconductor Applet Servicehttp://jas.eng.buffalo.edu/

  12. Electrical Engineering: Circuit Design • Mesh Analysis for DC Circuits, Bayardhttp://gaia.ecs.csus.edu/~bayardj/engr17/webmesh/

  13. Civil Engineering: Statics and Truss AnalysisFUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING REVIEWhttp://www.feexam.ou.edu/

  14. How MERLOT Facilitates Use of its Collection • Peer Reviews help users select material • User Comments supplement peer reviews • Assignmentsallow instructors to share mechanisms for using modules • Collections allow instructors to gather module references by category

  15. Summary • MERLOT Learning Materials can be used in a broad set of classes • The Engineering Education Community is just beginning to discover MERLOT’s collectionVisit MERLOT Engineering:http://taste.merlot.org/portal/engineering/
