Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet • Jacques was a Catholic missionary and an explorer while Louis was a French-Canadian trader and explorer. • Jacques was born in Laon, France • Louis was born near Quebec City and was raised in a Jesuit seminary • In 1672 Joliet was named the leader of the exploration of the great lakes. • After the expedition Marquette went back to preach to a tribe of Illinois Native Americans until his death in 1675

What did they discover • first Europeans to sail along the Mississippi River. • sailed Lake Michigan and explored both the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. • they didn’t want to be captured so they sailed up the Illinois River into Lake Michigan • after a canoe tipping Joliet lost all of his maps and dairies of the expedition. • They sailed the Mississippi River in 1673

  5. What kind of ships did they use • They used two birch bark canoes • They mainly sailed • Sometimes traveled on foot • Carried salted meat, trinkets for trading and some dairies for recording • Spread word of God from tribe to tribe

  6. About the Exploration Party • They took a group of five men • Took 30 days to go 1,273 miles • Took twice as long 54 days to only go 920 miles • Joliet had paddled 2,500 miles on his exploration of the Mississippi River • Marquette drew a map of the country and kept a diary

  7. Fun Facts • In 1675 Joliet married Claire-Francoise Bissot • Joliet and Claire had one child Jean-Baptiste Joliet • 1700 Joliet died on an exploration • After trying to contact Illinois Indians Marquette fell ill • 1675 May 19 Marquette died

Champlain • Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer and navigator who mapped much of North America • Searched for the Northwest Passage and settle on the Gaspe Peninsula • 1608 led 32 colonists to settle in Quebec • Helped found a colony in Port Royal and Nova Scotia in 1605 • Champlain was a governor for Quebec until his death in December 25, 1635

  9. Interesting Facts • Champlain was well educated • Known as father of Canada • Expedition consisted of 24 canoes, 60 warriors, and only three white men • 1610, 40 year old Champlain married 12 year old Helene Boulle • December 25, 1635 Champlain died
