  2. The Lure of the West • Push-Pull Factors: • Events & conditions that force (push) people to move somewhere else, or strongly attract (pull) them to move.

Push Factors • Conditions that force people to move • Civil War displaced thousands of farmers, freed slaves, & other workers • Farm land in the East was too expensive for African Americans, immigrants, & other poor Americans • Freedom from religious & ethnic oppression • Wide open spaces for outlaws on the run

  4. Pull Factors (1) • Things that strongly attract people to move • Pacific Railway Acts – 1862 & 1864 • Gov’t gave large land grants to the Union and Central Pacific Railroads • Received more than 175 million acres! • Sold some of this land to settlers arriving in the West for huge profits!

Pull Factors (2) • Morrill Land Grant Act, 1862 • Gave state governments millions of acres of Western land • Sold the land to finance “land grant” colleges specializing in agriculture & mechanical arts • States sold their land grants to land speculators: people who bought large amounts of land in the hopes of selling it later for a profit

Pull Factors (3) • Homestead Act, 1862 • Settlers were given 160 acres in the West if: • They were 21 or the head of a family • American citizens or immigrants applying to be one • Built a house at least 12’ x 14’ • Lived in it 6 months a year • Farm the land for 5 straight years before owning it • Created more than 372,000 farms

Pull Factor (4) • Private Property! • Settlers had legally enforceable, transferrable property rights • Land parcels were measured, registered, & deeded • Cattle were branded to show ownership • American economic concepts of private property, private enterprise, and a free market extended from coast to coast
