  2. Basic Puritan Beliefs and Characteristics • Calvinism- Predestination decided by omnipotent God • Education for all • Hard work • Material success was a sign from God that you could be one of the chosen • Wanted the Church of England to be organized in line according to scripture

Puritan Problems… • Self-Righteousness led to double standard of “sins” for non-believers • “City on a hill…the eyes of the people are upon us” • Uneven application of laws • Narrow-mindedness • Scapegoating- witchcraft trials • Trials led to reform for separation of church and state • No dancing, music

Basic Quaker Beliefs and Characteristics • Direction relationship with God • Practical, not formal education • Pacifism • No oaths • Martyrdom • Minimalist • Belief in equality • Opposition to slavery • Tolerant • No formal doctrines, theological statements or ceremonies • Wide, regional movement from Europe • Repentance

  5. Quaker Problems… • No central authority • Pacifism led to people taking advantage of them • Native American raids on settlements • No public institutions • Repressed by Puritans

  6. Basics Pilgrim Beliefs and Characteristics • Objected to unnecessary or excessive doctrine or theology • Mostly came from small community in Nottingham, England • Believed in Predestination • Tolerant
