  2. Self-Care Deficit Theory “The inabilities of people to care for themselves at times when they need assistance because of their state of personal health” (Orem 1959 Orem described her work as a general theory of nursing: Theory of Self-Care Theory of Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing Systems

  3. The Components of Orem’s Theory • Compensatory – nurse provides total care • Partially Compensatory – the nurse and the client share responsibility for care. • Educative-Development – client has primary responsibility for personal health, with nurse acting as a consultant.

  4. Orem’s Theory

Client/Person: • Tailored to each individual’s level of dependence. • Health • Is an individual responsibility to promote and maintain appropriate self-care. • Environment • Being able to provide for themselves. Anyone that comes in contact with that person. (ex: family, etc.) • Nursing • Educates and provides care for all levels on dependency. • Our goal is to provide increase levels of independence.

  7. Assessment • The nurse should determine why a client is unable to meet their needs. • Accomplishing their ADL’s and performing ROM in order for them to become self-sufficient. • The nurse MUST determine how much self-care the client is able to perform themselves.

  8. Nursing Diagnosis • Knowledge Deficit • Related to changes in the body, both physical and mental. • Self-Care Deficit • Related to the level of ambulation.

  9. Planning • What can be done to enable the client to meet these needs.

  10. Implementation • Focus on formulating goals for your patient and have patient express concerns about the goals including suggestions.

  11. Evaluation • Having the patient perform self-care activities is the best way to evaluate the plan.

  12. How Orem Relates To Today’s Nurses • Orem’s theory is what we are taught to practice as nurses. It embodies the concept of maintaining holistic health. In order to have a healthy physiological and psychological self-concept: self-care is a MUST!!
