  8. GRADING & REPORTING • MCPS is implementing Standards Based Grading & Reporting which aligns instruction and assessment to standards. • This provides a more accurate reflection of what students know and are able to do.

EXAMPLE CONTENT: GRADE 1 – SOCIAL STUDIES MEASUREMENT TOPIC: CIVICS PROFICIENCY STATEMENT: A student has demonstrated proficiency by recognizing, identifying, describing and explaining the historical development and current status of the democratic principles and the development of skills and attitudes necessary to become responsible citizens.

EXAMPLE CONTENT: GRADE 2 – MATH MEASUREMENT TOPIC: OPERATIONS AND ALGEBRAIC THINKING PROFICIENCY STATEMENT: A student has demonstrated proficiency by (Understanding) understanding the relationship between addition and subtraction; (Computing) fluently adding and subtracting within 20; (Applying) using addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one and two-step word problems; (Reasoning) using mental strategies to add and subtract within 20. Explaining and justifying a solution to a problem or extending from something known to something not yet known; (Engaging) seeing math as sensible, useful, and do-able – if you work at it – and being willing to do the work.

EXAMPLE CONTENT: GRADE 3 – MATH MEASUREMENT TOPIC: OPERATIONS AND ALGEBRAIC THINKING PROFICIENCY STATEMENT: A student has demonstrated proficiency by: (Understanding) Representing and interpreting multiplication and division problems. Understanding the relationship between multiplication and division; (Computing) Fluently multiplying and dividing within 100; (Applying) Using multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems. Applying properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Applying strategies to solve two-step word problems using the four operations; (Reasoning) Explaining patterns in an addition or multiplication table. Explaining and justifying a solution to a problem or extending from something known to something not yet known; (Engaging) Seeing mathematics as sensible, useful, and doable-if you work at it-and being willing to do the work.

  14. Sherwood Elementary Three Guiding Principles Mutual Respect Treat others the way that you want to be treated. Respect the fact that we are all different and yet all the same. Our school is a large family and we need to support each other. Right to Learn and Teach Students and teachers as Sherwood have the right to a productive learning environment. We all contribute to that environment by doing our best, helping others and following the rules. Self-Control You are responsible for the good and bad things that you do. You control yourself. Be proud of your accomplishments, and apologize when you make a mistake. You cannot blame someone else for what you do.
