  1. Windows 8 Proves Web Apps Are the Future of Computing Windows 8 Seamlessly Integrates Touch, Desktop, and Web

  2. Windows 8 • The next version of the Windows OS will run on everything from phones and tablets to desktop PCs and it will feature apps built in HTML5, CSS, and Javascript. • These are the technologies used to build apps that run in the Web browser. • It will be able to run on laptops, desktops, PCs with a mouse and keyboard, and touch slates.

  3. Google/Microsoft • Google, with its Chrome OS and Chromebook laptops, and Microsoft are now both concentrating on making it easy for Web developers to create for their platforms. • However, the new class of apps in Windows 8 won’t be true web apps. This could pose a problem for Microsoft developers. • These apps will be built with HTML 5, an advanced language that will greatly improve the user experience.

  4. App developers • If developers who work with HTML5, Javascript and CSS are about to have aplatform (one made for Windows 8) for which they can easily develop applications, they will have more incentive than ever to write code that could move fluidly between the "desktop" and the “cloud”.

  5. Possible hang-ups • Might be impossible to create a “code once deploy everywhere”; there’s a better chance for a “code once tweak as needed” platform. • Economics alone could drive coders and developers into an innately cloud-centric development environment built on open standards.

  6. Summary • This technology won’t be the end of native apps; just a greater addition to! • It does mean the rise of an entirely new app, an adaptable technology that can live anywhere, and is at home in the OS as it is in the browser.

  7. What is innovative about this topic? • The innovation lies in the fact that this technology should work seamlessly with multiple devices and will probably replace the standard “application program” that we are used to, i.e. Microsoft Office, Quickbooks, etc. • More and more people are using devices like smartphones and the iPod Touch which use apps already, so it won’t be an entirely new concept for them.

  8. Why is it important to watch this technology? • I can see apps replacing the standard program applications because they will be more “cloud-centric” which will allow for greater flexibility and productivity for the user. • I have noticed some apps that I use are actually a link to a website, which is pretty convenient. • It will be the wave of the future.

  9. How might this innovation affect my future career/life? • Having these apps on a tablet or similar device will allow for computing on the fly thereby increasing productivity. • I can see more companies utilizing this technology for their employees, no matter what industry they are in.
