  1. Speech during the invasion of Constantinople • Read the background of the speech on page 320. • Speculation: What might Empress Theodora have said to her husband that “kept her husband in Rome and led to the slaughter of the rebels”? • Now read the speech (introduction) on one 330. FYI: “shroud” is cloth used to wrap a body before burial.

  2. Comparisons • How are Anna Akhmatova and Empress Theodora similar? • How are they different?

  3. “Conscientious Objector” by Edna St. Vincent Millay I shall die, but that is all I shall do for Death.

  4. Answer the following: • 1. How does the author immediately establish a serious tone in this poem? • What is one of the two things the speaker in “Conscientious Objector” will not do? • In what ways can people refuse to cooperate with Death in their day-to-day lives?

  5. “A Man” by Nina Cassian “While fighting for his country, he lost an arm and was suddenly afraid.”

  6. Answer the following: • 1. Why does the poet end the poem with an image of a wing? • 2. Create one sentence EACH to sum up the theme of each of the following: “The Sniper”, “I was not one of those who left the land”, “Speech during the Invasion of Constantinople”, “Conscientious Objector”, and “A Man”.

  7. “The War Prayer” by Mark Twain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yruRt7mQWgg

  8. The Reader’s Theatre The language of the original text has been highly simplified for this adaptation. Twain wrote the story in 1904–5, but after trying just once to publish it, he set it aside. He wrote a friend, “I don’t think the prayer will be published in my time. None but the dead are permitted to tell the truth.” Citizens 1-6 Minister Stranger

  9. Now read and annotate the original text…use your metacognitive markers…return completed for homework.

  10. Rather than assigning blame to any one group, or debating whether or not war is ever justifiable, “The War Prayer” simply ask us to consider the cost of war. Throughout history, man has suffered from a collective short-term memory regarding wars past, only weighing the cost of war in hindsight.

  11. Task one • List words/phrases that promote patriotism in a time of war. *devoted love, support, and defense of one's country

  12. Task two List words/phrases that sound religious, “church-like”, or refer to God.

  13. Task three Deduce which character (the stranger or the minister) is God’s messenger. Why did you decide this? Be specific in your reasoning. *To come to a conclusion from something known or assumed

  14. Task four Analyze Twain’s ending of the story. Consider the last line carefully. How is irony used in the ending of this story? What effect will this ending have on today’s readers?

  15. The Gettysburg Address is a speech delivered by Abraham Lincoln at the November 19, 1863, dedication of Soldier’s National Cemetery, a cemetery for Union soldiers killed at the Battle Of Gettysburg during the American Civil War…this speechreminded the listeners of the purpose of the soldier’s sacrifice: equality, freedom, and national unity http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_hYZFUsOuw

  16. What do these events have in common?
