Basics When Writing About Literature… • No personal pronouns: I, you, me, my, we, us… • T.A.G. your introduction = Title, Author, Genre • Identifying titles (MLA format): • short works (stories, poems, songs, articles, chapters, etc…) are put in “quotation marks” • long works (books, magazines, movies, plays, etc…) are italicized (if hand writing, underline) • Stick to literary present • Don’t end your paragraph with a quotation Look at your essay! On the back of your reflection sheet, list ANY of these items that pertain to YOU!

Thesis Statements Clarity in thesis Theme = implicit (underlying) message of the story • Student Examples: • When decisions are not made by the individual, it always leads to disaster. • Harrison Bergeron makes the right decision by standing up to the controlling government because it shows the people, if only for a moment, how important freedom and personal identity really are. • One should be free to fulfill her own destiny and follow her own dreams.

Introductions Examples of “Good Starters” CONNECT Introduction“Hooks” to YOUR ideas: • Student Examples: • A flower’s growth is greatly affected by the environment around it, regardless of the way it is built on the inside. Similarly, the way a child is nurtured or kicked by those around her shapes her character and identity. • Rabindranath Tagore once said, “Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sky.” Tagore describes how clouds, symbolic of his former burdens, no longer make him troublesome, as he has learned to view them in a positive way that brightens his day. Just as in Tagore’s metaphor, in Leslie Norris’ “Shaving,” 17 year old Barry must learn to overcome the internal pain associated with his father’s near death.

  6. Paragraphs Point + Evidence + Explanation + Link • One well explained idea = one paragraph • The reason we worked so hard on paragraphing skills was so that you could apply this skill when writing longer essays • Clear paragraphing is a skill you need in ALL of your classes!

Quotation Blending BLEND quotations smoothly into YOUR ideas & analyze them • This is HARD, we will keep working on it! • Student Example 1: • After so meticulously shaving his father’s face, Barry goes upstairs… and looks out the window, at “the beam of dying sunlight, and Barry stood there in its golden warmth for a whole minute, knowing it would soon be gone” (12). The evening’s dying sunlight acts as a metaphor for his father. Though Barry knows he will soon be gone, he accepts the fact and focuses on enjoying the remaining moments of his father’s life.

  8. Quotation Blending • Student Example 2: • When Harrison escapes from jail and declares “I am the Emperor” (5), he is symbolically referring to how he is the “Emperor” of his own identity. It is also visible from his indignant tone that he is angry at society for unfairly oppressing him and influencing him for the worse. • Harrison Bergeron and the dancer are soon “dead before they hit the floor”(7). This abrupt change and tragic ending emphasizes how society has the power to unfairly destroy the identity of individuals. The gun is symbolic of the power that society has…

Conclusions • End with reflection, not just summary • Student Example: • As shown in Amy Tan’s story “Two Kinds,” the familial environment one is raised in can have a strong influence on identity. In Jing Mei’s case, her mother’s suppression of her personal desires and beliefs as well as her unreasonable expectations lead Jing Mei to rightfully engage in justified rebellion. However, if her mother had not pushed as hard as she did, there is every chance that Jing Mei could have become the “obedient daughter” (27) her mother wanted her to be. Further proving both that identity is not immutable and the way one is raised can often have a powerful impact on identity, be it positive or negative.
