  37. Questions? • Ask now or anytime – no question is too small!

  38. Basic Hydraulics

  39. The Circulation System • Pump • Filter • Heater/Solar Heater • Chlorinator/Salt System • Valves • Cleaners • Return Fittings • Pipe & Fittings • Skimmers/Main Drains • The pump is the heart of every filtration system. It must overcome all of the resistance to flow (Friction Losses) created by all other components of the system.

  40. Pump Affinity Law • Speed (rpm) ≈ Flow (gpm) • Speed (rpm) ≈ Pressure^2 (ft. of Head) • Speed (rpm) ≈ Power^3 (kW) • Examples of Reduced speed • 3000 rpm  1500 rpm (50%) • ½ Speed (rpm) ≈ ½ gpm • ½ Speed (rpm) ≈ (½)2 = ½ x ½ = ¼ Head • ½ Speed (rpm) ≈ (½)3 = ½ x ½ x ½ = ⅛ kW • 3000 rpm  1000 rpm (33%) • 1/3 Speed (rpm) ≈ 1/3 x 1/3 x 1/3 = 1/27 kW

  41. An Example of the Affinity Law

  42. Step 1 – Calculate Pool Volume • To determine volume in a pool, first know that one cubic foot of water equals 7.48 gallons

  43. Step 1 – Calculate Pool Volume • L x W x A.D. x 7.48 or L x W x ((D1 + D2)  2) x 7.48 • Example: • L = 30 Ft. W = 15 Ft. • D1 = 3 Ft. D2 = 5 Ft. • Volume = 30 x 15 x ((3 + 5)  2) x 7.48 • = 450 x 4 x 7.48 • = 13,464

  44. Step 1 – Calculate Pool Volume Freeform Pools Add the Total of the A’s (136) A 5 17 20 20 18 18 16 5 17 Divide (136) by the total number of measurements taken (9) 136 9 = 15.11 (average width)

  45. Step 1 - Calculate Pool Volume Freeform Pools Add the Total of the B’s (103) B 7 16 Divide (103) by the total number of measurements taken (6) 24 25 24 7 103  6 = 17.16 (average length)

  46. 18 5 17 20 20 18 16 5 17 7 16 24 25 24 7 Step 1 - Calculate Pool Volume Freeform Pools Use the formula AW x AL x AD x 7.48 15.11 x 17.16 x 5 x 7.48 5’ 9,697.35 Gallons & B Points A

  47. Additional Pool Volume Calculations • Volume =  x r2 x average depth x 7.48 •  = 3.14 • d = 20 Ft. • D1 = 3 Ft. D2 = 5 Ft. • Volume = 3.14 x 10 x 10 x ((3 + 5)  2) x 7.48 • = 3.14 x 100 x 4 x 7.48 • = 9,394 Gallons

  48. Additional Pool Volume Calculations Calculate as two pools 20’ x 30’ x 3’ x 7.48 = _____________ 13,464 Gallons 20’ x 30’ x 6’ x 7.48 = _26,928 Gallons ( 9’ + 3’ ) / 2 = 6’ = 40,392 Gallons + 26,928 13,464

  49. Benefits of Moving Water Slower • Reduced TDH (lower water velocity) • Reduced energy cost (lower kWh) • Quieter • Extends the life of the equipment • Water is filtered to a smaller particle • Better distribution of chemicals reduces the amount of chemicals needed
