  2. Fear of Radicalism • Americans grew more and more suspicious of anything foreign even though the war was over • The Bolshevik Government in Russia was encouraging workers around the world to overthrow Capitalism • Many Americans feared Bolshevism and anarchists (people who believed there should be no government) fanned these fears

  3. The Red Scare • The Red Scare was a time period when the government went after Reds otherwise known as Communists • Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer ordered the arrest of people suspected of being Communists and anarchists • Palmer said the actions were justified to protect our form of government • The government deported a few hundred of the aliens it had arrested for suspicious activity

Saco and Vanzetti • Two men robbed a shoe factory shooting and killing a guard and paymaster • Police arrested Sacco and Vanzetti who were both Italian immigrants for the crime • The two men were sentenced to death • Neither had a criminal record but both were anarchists and Sacco owned a pistol similar to the murder weapon • This case demonstrated the feelings against foreigners and radicals in the US in the 1920’s

  5. Strikes Sweep Country • Steel industry is demanding higher wages and an 8 hour workday • There were many riots one of which 18 strikers died in Gary, Indiana • Calvin Coolidge told the police officers in Boston that they had no right to strike because it jeopardized the public’s safety • The entire Boston Police force was fired and most Americans agreed with this decission

  6. Radical Unrest • Many Northern whites resented African American competition for jobs • Marcus Garvey was an African American man a lot looked to for support and he encouraged blacks to admire black things and black people
