  2. Minimalism Created in the 60s and 70s. There are many different types of minimalism. Minimalism could be defined as a style of composition characterized by an intentionally simplified rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic vocabulary.

  3. Features of Minimalism • Repetitious background or harmony. • Phasing • Subtractive/Additive melody • Lengthy loops and cycles

  4. Repetitious Background Background music repeats with occasional slight changes in meter. Minimalist harmonies are usually just a set of chords with only one or two notes played at any one time.

  5. Phasing Phasing is a technique that is used to create complex rhythms from a single, simpler rhythm. Phasing is done by first playing two of the same rhythms together, then slowly shifting the duplicate of the rhythm backward or forward by a small increment.

  6. Subtractive and additive minimalism. In subtractive minimalism a beat, word, or syllable is subtracted from the beginning or end of the original melody. Additive minimalism adds a beat, word, or syllable to the original. “Cockroaches” uses the subtractive type by subtracting words and syllables from the end of the sentence.

  7. Composers Three of the top composers of minimalistic music are Steve Reich, John Adams, and Philip Glass.

  8. Steve Reich Steve Reich was born in 1936. Our clapping music idea came from Reich. First recording was published in the 1960s.

  9. John Adams John Adams was born in 1947. His first recording was made in the early 70s.

  10. Philip GlassBorn in 1937. First album published in 1977.
