  1. Multi Region Service Learning Days Presented by the Regions of the Midwest Zonal Forum September 13th – 15th 2019

  2. Planning Made Simple Presented by: Mark H. & Leah A. September 13th – 15th 2019

  3. WHY SHOULD WE PLAN? • Planning gives clear objectives for provision of services • A planning cycle provides continuity from year to year • An inclusive method allows Group input and supports the Groups directing service efforts

  4. WHAT IS A PLAN? • A plan consists of two parts: • the “what” • and the “how”

  5. HOW DO WE START TO PLAN? • With the “What,” of course! • The first step is to find out “what” services the Groups would like the Service Body to facilitate

  6. Pre-planning Logistics • Decide on a date for your planning session and begin announcing it well in advance. • Make it attractive! Chili cook-off? Ice Cream Social? • Make connection to personal inventory • To prepare: Ask the Groups to discuss which services they would like to see, and what concerns, if any, they have about the Service Body. GSRs could also bring back specific inventory questions to discuss.

  7. Inventory If the Service Body has never done a formal inventory, select a method for assessing the body’s strengths and weaknesses (tbd in the next few slides). Send questions to Groups to discuss and generate ideas for projects or events that address issues they identify. If planning has occurred previously, invite groups to assess the body’s success in accomplishing the goals it set out the year before.

  8. Inventory - It Works, How and Why Tradition 5 How well are we carrying the message of recovery? Are there addicts our Service Body isn’t reaching? How can we make our meetings more accessible? What can we do to make new members feel more at home in service? Has the atmosphere of recovery diminished in service? Would a change in our meeting format strengthen that atmosphere?

  9. Inventory - Abbreviated Planning Tool • Members could write (before) or discuss (during): • How well has the Service Body fostered the willingness of the local fellowship to volunteer for service positions? How well does the Service Body function in keeping service positions consistently filled, with no open commitments? • How well has the Service Body built cooperative relationships with those in the larger community? • How fully trained and supported are the trusted servants who interact with members of the community? • How well has the body interacted with other NA service bodies?

  10. Planning Session Logistics – Remember your giant post-it notes! • Begin by discussing the previous year’s goals and inviting input on how well those have been met. • Discussing in small groups and then reporting back can help newer or less vocal members feel safe to share. • Invite participants to consider if the goals need to be changed, or if members need to make changes to better accomplish the goals—or make them more ambitious.

  11. Planning Session Logistics – Remember your giant post-it notes! • Discuss areas identified by Groups as needing improvement • Open the floor for suggestions for specific projects brought back by the Groups. • Write down all suggestions (remember, evaluating and critiquing are NOT brainstorming!) • Classify (and combine similar) suggestions into 2 separate lists: • Events and Projects

  12. Planning Session Logistics – Discussion and prioritization • Fully discuss all ideas focusing on benefits and potential difficulties. • Take stock of Service Body’s human, financial and time resources. • Based on resources available, invite members to select a given number of events and a given number of projects they would like the Service Body to undertake. • All present vote for the events & projects (show of hands, tally)

  13. And now the HOW! • Decide on specifics: • Who will take the lead on each task selected by members? • Create a task group or assign task to an existing subcommittee • What exactly is going to be accomplished? • When will the goal be met? • How will we know we are successful?

  14. And now the HOW! • And now you have a plan!!!
