What are Advanced Placement Classes? • Courses that students can take and potentially earn college credit (exam results) • Teachers are certified and teach the College Board’s approved curriculum • Comprehensive end-of-course exam administered and graded by the College Board • Students who pass this exam earn the college credit

  3. Want to be a Successful AP Student? Do these things Things to consider • Work daily on reading and homework • Apply effective study skills • Notes should be detailed, organized and reviewed • Use effective study groups • Buy AP review books • Include teachers, counselors and parents in the registration process • How many AP courses is too many • Job vs. Study – which pays more • Job • $3,970 (15 hours a week during school year) • Pass two AP tests • $10,500 (tuition 10 credits + salary for graduating early)

Pros and Cons of Taking AP Courses Pros Cons • Gain an edge: College admissions officers look favorably on students who take challenging courses • Develop study habits necessary for tackling rigorous course work • Study subjects in greater depth and detail • Take classes with others who want to achieve and learn • Earn college credit by passing the exit exam • Take on significantly heavier workload that may increase stress and minimize time for other activities • Pay fees to take AP Exams • Fee reductions are offered to students from low income families

AP Language Arts Courses • Language and Composition (11th grade) • Analysis of nonfiction: essays, speeches, sermons, etc. • Focus on argumentation & rhetorical devices • Students learn: • how to determine the author’s purpose • how language contributes to the effectiveness of an argument • to write persuasive analysis of nonfiction text • Literature and Composition (12th grade) • Analysis of literature: fiction, drama & poetry • Focus on theme & literary devices • Students learn: • how to determine theme and message • how the author uses literary devices to develop theme and meaning • to write compelling analysis of poetry, prose and drama

  9. AP Social Studies Courses • U.S. History • Yearlong course (11th grade only) • Government • Yearlong course (12th grade only) U.S History and Government are State required courses for graduation. If a student fails an AP class, they must take a standard-level course in order to graduate.

  10. AP Occupational Education • Micro & Macro Economics • Yearlong course but counts for two AP classes • For grades 10-12 • Computer Science • Yearlong course for grades 10-12 • TEALS Program • Psychology • New yearlong course for grades 11-12

AP Science Courses • Biology • Chemistry • Environmental Science • Physics • Taken after science graduation requirements are met (2 years: physical/earth and biology) • Biology and chemistry taken after successful completion of 1st year chemistry • Speak with your science teacher for help choosing your science class for next year.

  13. The Exam • Taken the 1st or 2nd week of May • $89 per exam (reduced fee for students receiving free/reduced lunch) • Not a “required” part of the class, but strongly encouraged • Scored on a 1-5 score range

How to Register for AP Courses • Obtain an AP Course Registration Form • We have them here tonight or from the counseling office • Fill out the AP Course Registration Form • Student signature • Parent or guardian signature • Teacher signature for each class • Enter current course grade where appropriate • Turn the this form in with registration packet

  16. "Round Robin" Time • Visit with AP Teachers and AP Students • Pick up a summary of AP course syllabi • Questions & answers Thank you for taking the time to attend!
