  2. Objectives of the lesson • Understand conservation and its importance. • Identify ways in which people can contribute to conservation efforts.

  3. Conservation of Resources • Conservation: is preserving or protecting natural resources.

  4. THE THREE R’s • Reduce • Reuse • Recycle

  5. Reduce To cut down on the amount of resources used, (or to use less of a resource).

  6. To use a resource again and again.

  7. To reuse a resource by breaking it down and using it to make a new product.

  8. Effects of conservation • Using less amount of a resource. • Using less energy resources. • Causing less pollution. • Saving space in landfills.

  9. Soil conservation Soil is an important resource, that is harmed by some farming practices, which enabled wind and water to carry away the soil. How Soil can be conserved? • Use windbreaks in windy areas. (Windbreaks are lines of trees or fences that stop the wind from carrying away soil).

  10. Soil conservation How Soil can be conserved? 2. Contour plowing: Planting of crops along the curves of sloping land, not down the slopes, so water will not flow quickly downhill and carry soil with it.

  11. Soil conservation How Soil can be conserved? 3. Strip cropping: planting strips of grass or clover between strips of crops, which holds the soil and helps hold water.

  12. Soil conservation How Soil can be conserved? 4. Terracing: Building up the soil to form level places, then crops are planted on these level areas.

  13. Soil conservation How Soil can be conserved? 5. Crop rotation: Changing of planted crops from year to year, which changes the soil’s nutrients. Example: Corn takes nitrogen from the soil. Alfalfa adds nitrogen to the soil, if grown after corn. Thus, chemical fertilizers will not be used and this reduces the risk of land and water pollution.

  14. Soil conservation How Soil can be conserved? 6. Intercropping: Planting different crops near each other. This keeps some insects from spreading, because many insects eat only one kind of crop, and this reduces the use of pesticides and so reduces the risk of water and land pollution.

  15. Water conservation • Many areas in the world are threatened by drought. • The population is growing. Because of the previous two factors, it is believed that soon there will not be enough water for everyone.

  16. Water conservation Governments, farmers, and others began to look for ways to conserve water. A. Farmers: 1. Growing crops that don’t need much water. 2. Using drip irrigation instead of spraying; thus less water is lost to evaporation.

  17. Water conservation B. Homeowners: Having Xeriscape (Planting native plants and grasses that don’t require as much water) instead of a lawn. Lawns require a huge amount of water.

  18. Water conservation C. People: • Take short showers instead of taking a bath. • Not to leave faucets running. • Close the tap while brushing teeth.
