  1. Welcome at CERNandPractical information POCPA workshop Jean-Paul Burnet 14-16 June 2010

  2. Introduction to CERN Founded in 1954 by 12 countries Today: 20 member states 1000 MCHF / Year budget • 2250 staff (physicists, engineers, technicians, …) • 6500 visiting scientists (half of the world's particle physicists) • They come from 500 universities representing 80 nationalities. • 9000 people on CERN site everyday!

  3. Introduction to CERN LHC first ramp to 1.08 TeV 29/11/2009 LHC first physics 30/03/2010

  4. Where are we with LHC? • The machine is now working very well • at 3.5 TeV per beam (nominal 7 TeV) • with a di/dt at 2A/s (nominal 10 A/s) • Beam commissioning • beam 2.1010 protons per bunch up to 13 bunches (over 2808) • intensity up to 1011 protons per bunch (1,7.1011 nominal) • squeeze (β*)up to 0.55m, working at 2m • LHC plan • LHC will run up to end of 2011 • target for the integrated luminosities 1fb-1 end of 2011 • 2012 will be a large shut down for LHC consolidation (splices,…)

  5. Progress with beam

  6. Introduction to TE/EPC • The Group is responsible for all the magnet power supplies, klystron modulators (solid state) and static VAR compensators. • 67 staffs + 20 people in industrial support, 22 engineers • ~ 5000 power supplies from 1 kW to 144 MW, from 10A to 30kA, from 8V to 110kV • Recurrent budget = 4 MCHF

  7. CERN Map

  8. POCPA workshop • All sessions in this auditorium • Coffee break at 10H30 & 15H30 at 1st floor • Today lunch will be served at 12H45 restaurant 2 (offered by CERN) • Tuesday & Wednesday lunches will not be served but we can eat together in restaurant 2 (self canteen). • Wi-Fi access • Bus from CERN to Campanile Hotel at 18H30 • Bus from Campanile hotel to CERN at 8H30 on Tuesday and Wednesday • Any question: ask Marie at the coffee break, or call +41764870674 • Monday evening = free time

  9. POCPA visit & Dinner • Tuesday afternoon • a visit of CERN is proposed, Please register • SM18 (Superconducting magnet test facility) • Atlas Visitor Centre • POPS • Meeting point, restaurant 2 at 14H, Bus transport • Tuesday night • Leman lake Dinner (offered by CERN), Please register • Meeting point, CERN hostel (building 39) at 18h00, Bus transport

  10. AGENDA & Convener • Session conveners • Session 1: Bob Lambiase • Session 2: Ju Wang • Session 3: Jörg Eckoldt • Session 4: JP Burnet

  11. Next POCPA • I hope you will enjoy this workshop • We need to choose the place of the next one • To be discussed at the closing session for the next POCPA: • when ? • Where ? • Which subjects ? • Duration? • … • Now, let’s go for presentations!
