  2. First Impression • Read the text silently to yourself • Do not mark up the text • In the first directions box, write down your impression of the text, your reaction to it • Write at least a couple of sentences Close Reading

  3. Discussion • Listen to or see background information regarding the text • Think about the your original reading of the text • Write down any new impressions to the text Close Reading

  4. Observation • Second reading done whole class out loud and follow the text • Mark any phrases you find that are key to understanding the point of the passage • Write down your opinion of the text in the third box Close Reading

  5. Compare • Read a second text and repeat the steps • Work in groups to determine the main idea of both texts with support from each • Discuss similarities and differences Close Reading
