  5. Pardons • Pardoned anyone who had taken arms against him during civil war. • Like our civil war, people were not punished for going against the US.

  6. Census • Started a census to gather information about the city of Rome • Used the information to reduce free grain distribution from 300,000 to 150,000 • Like the USA, we have a census that is done every 10 years

  7. Farm Owners • Caesar made then hire at least 1/3 of their workers as free citizens than slaves • Made because of his laws reducing free grain

  8. Citizenship • Gave citizenship to Greek doctors and teachers • It was to encourage education

  9. Guilds • Guilds were disbanded because they usually created violence for their beliefs • Guilds were like labor unions

  10. Jury • Caesar removed jury duty. • Juries were only Senators and Equites

  11. Government Positions • Limited the time of power someone could be in • 1 year term for pro-praetor • 2 year term for pro-consuls • Like how we have our terms in office

  12. Tax Policy • Government now collected taxes and not tax collectors • USA has the IRS to collect taxes

  13. Calendar • Caesar changed the calendar • Added 67 days • It aligned with the solar cycle, seasons, celestial events • Renamed Quintilis to Julius (July) • We still use this calendar

  14. Bankruptcy • Made bankruptcy laws where a person would be free from all debts • The person would start with a clean slate instead of becoming a slave • The person owed money would be able to take belongings except for tools used for trade • Similar to our Chapter 7 bankruptcy
