  2. Exploring Health & Safety in India India is located on the continent of Asia. It is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country. It is the second most populous country in the world. India is 1/3 the size of the United States.

  3. What are some necessities of daily living & well being? • Food • Safe drinking water • Clothing • Shelter • Education • Health Care

  4. Health Concerns • Hunger/malnutrition • Lack of health care • Major infectious diseases • Poverty

  5. Percent of underweight children:

  6. Hunger/Malnourishment • India has higher levels of malnourished children than Sub-Saharan Africa, even though they have more funds to tackle the problems • Health has improved in India, however, 34% of India’s children under age five are malnourished

  7. Health Care • Lack of knowledge of mothers on how to care for sick children and poor health services further add to more child deaths • Less than one percent of the national budget goes towards public health spending

  8. Major Diseases • India’s growing population of more than one billion strains resources and complicates disease prevention • India has more new Tuberculosis (TB) cases annually than any other country. One third of the world’s cases are in India • India remains one of four countries where Polio continues

  9. Poverty Definition: • A condition in which a person or community is deprived of, and/or lacks the essentials for a minimum standard of well-being and life. • Millions of Indian children live in poverty • Some 260 million people in India live on the equivalent of less than $1 a day

  10. Water Crisis • India’s huge and growing population is putting a severe strain on all of the country’s natural resources • Most water sources are contaminated by sewage and agricultural runoff • Toilet usage is extremely poor in rural areas of the country; only 14% of the rural population has access to a toilet • Hand washing is also very low, increasing the spread of disease. • In order to decrease the amount of disease spread through drinking-water, toilet usage and hygiene must be improved simultaneously

  11. Well being & Education • Between eight million and 10 million Indian children are out of school. • Some families keep their children at home because the school is too far away and children can't make the journey twice a day. Getting to school might also be dangerous, particularly for young, girls who might encounter harassment. • Some families do not have enough money to afford school fees or the cost of uniforms and school supplies. Families in this predicament may need children to work to contribute to the family income or do house-hold chores so the parents can work.
