  1. C. S. Lewis 1898-1963

  2. Born November 29 1898 in Belfast Ireland. • When C. S. Lewis was around 4 years old his dog Jacksie was killed by a car. After this he decided that his name would then be Jacksie. Later on he began to accept being called Jack and that became his name that his friends and family called him by for the rest of his life. • His mother died from cancer on August 23, 1908. This was her husband Albert’s birthday. Lewis and his brother Warren were sent to Wynyard School in England. During this time Lewis decided to become an atheist and began to explore Greek, Norse, and Irish Mythology. • In 1916 he won a scholarship to Oxford where he studied from April of 1917 until September. He then enlisted in the army (World War 1) and reached the front line in France on his 19th birthday. • In April of 1918 he was wounded in battle and was discharged in December. He went home and took care of his friend’s (Paddy Moore) family. Paddy had been killed in the battle that Lewis was wounded in. He would look after them for the rest of his life.

  3. Conversion • Lewis studied at Oxford from 1919 to 1924. He then became a tutor at the University and eventually was elected a Fellow of Magdalen College. He stayed there for 29 years until he left to teach at Cambridge in 1954. • Lewis meets J. R. R. Tolkien in 1926 and they became very good friends. They created the literary group “The Inklings” of which Lewis and Tolkien were the core members. • In 1931 Lewis became a Christian. He attributes this change of heart to many talks with Tolkien and other friends. He also said that the writings of G. K. Chesterton had a deep impact on his thoughts about God.

  4. Literature • His first work “Dymer” a book-length poem was published under the pseudonym of Clive Hamilton in 1926. • 1941-1944 Lewis publishes the “Screwtape Letters”, gives talks over the radio that would later be published as “Mere Christianity”, gives lectures at the University of Durbam which was published as “The Abolition of Man” • 1938-1945 Lewis writes his Space Trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength) • 1947 “Miracles” was published. • 1950-1956 Narnia Series was published. • 1961 “A Grief Observed” was published a year after the death of his wife under the pseudonym of N. W. Clerk.

  5. Later Years • Married Joy Gresham in 1956. Joy was an American writer who had converted later in her life to Christianity. She attributed part of that change to the written works of Lewis. Lewis was 58 and Joy was 43. Joy fought bone cancer for 4 years and then passed away in 1960. Lewis continued to care for her two sons Douglas and David Gresham after her death. • Lewis passed away on November 22 1963. His death wasn’t noticed as much in the media because Jack died the same day that John F. Kennedy was assassination of John F. Kennedy as well as Aldous Huxley (author of Brave New World). • Lewis is considered one of the most influential Christian writers of his time. His thoughts on Christianity are read and quoted by many members of different Christian sects. His fiction has also made a huge impact on the literary world. Books series like “Series of Unfortunate Events”, “Artemis Fowl”, and “Harry Potter” all carry traces of being influenced by Lewis’s series.
