Life at TMS • Current 6th Grade Interview Questions
6th Grade TMS At A Glance 2013-2014 Schedule 6 period traditional • Team Concept • Classes will meet @ 66 minutes daily with an Academic Lab at the end of the day • Counselors will be going into 5th grade classrooms starting March 20th
The Building • 6th grade will be primarily in the Claude Browne Wing that we have been occupying for the last 5 years. • Building Map
YEAR Elective Wheel Math Social Studies English Science Band and/or Choir OR Academic Lab PE/Health, PE/Health, Art & Computers The elective classes are 1 quarter each 6th Grade Schedule
The Academic Lab Class • Academic Lab meets at the end of each day (except for Wednesdays) • Character Education lessons • Study/Organizational Skills • Extra support in academic areas • Group setting for extra help in classes • Students choosing Band or Choir- will come out of Ac Lab twice a week

Choir/Show Choir • Meaghan Pieper is our 6th & 7th Grade choir director as well as our Middle School Show Choir Director • Andrew Drinkall is our 8th Grade choir director as well as the HS Show Choir Director.
BAND- MR. Blankenship and Dr. ThomasLetter from Band teachers on table in foyer. Parent Band meeting will be held in the Fall.
After School Tutoring • Tuesdays & Thursdays 2:30-3:30 pm • Selected Saturdays 8:00-11:00 am • Student’s team recommends student for tutoring- parents will be notified of tutoring. • Extra support in concepts students may struggle in and work completion
Sports/Activities: 7th & 8th Grades only • Fall • Football • Volleyball • Softball • Cross Country • Winter • Basketball • Wrestling • Spring • Track & Field • All year- Dance, Cheerleading & Show Choir
Changes from 5th grade to TMS… • Social Changes • Changing teachers every period • Traveling from class to class- 3-4 minutes • Canteen available everyday; lunch $ can add up • Some classes on an alternating day format • Emotional Changes • Excitement • Peer pressure • Stress- Positive & Negative • Nervousness • New friendships; picking the right friends • Rollercoaster moods • Self-identity • Rebellion • Independence
Suggestions • Students need to use TMS planners daily • Check over planner daily to hold student accountable • Designate folders/binders according to classes • Encourage students to use time wisely in class and in the hallways • Organization is key!! Find a way that works for your student… trial and error! • Encourage your student to get involved!!
PTSO- Please join! • Parent-Teacher-Student Organization • Meets 2nd Monday of every month at 5:30pm in TMS Cafeteria. • Plan special events- trivia night, TMS Day at the Ballpark, Winter Bazaar, etc.
5th grade Tours • April 1st and April 2nd • 5th grade classrooms will visit TMS campus • Short assembly- current TMS students present to the 5th grade students “What is life like at the middle school?” • TMS students take class on a tour of building
Transition Day • Tentative date is August 9th • All incoming 6th grade students will be invited to attend Transition Day • Half day- usually week before school starts • Team building activities, assembly, lunch served, tour building
Orientation for 2013-2014 School Year • Tentative Dates are August 5th, 6th, & 7th • Students will… • Receive schedules • Opportunity to buy planners, gym clothes, spirit wear • School pictures will be taken • Opportunity to tour building • Opportunity for parents to change addressforms, etc. Parents must be present with student!
