  1. Arnold Gesell (1880-1961) REPLACE THIS BOX WITH YOUR ORGANIZATION’S HIGH RESOLUTION LOGO ABSTRACT Research Area and Theory Biography Other Important Facts Arnold Gesell was born in June 21, 1880 in Alma, Wisconsin.  His father was a photographer and his mother was a teacher.  Both his mother and father highly valued education.  Gesell was the eldest of his four younger siblings.  His interest in children first developed as he watched his younger siblings grow and develop (Browse,2011). “The measure of a society is its reverence for children.” Arnold Gesell's early work involved the study of mental retardation in children.(Mayes,2011) Gesell concluded that mental and physical development follows a typical and measurable pattern over time. This eventually led to him to creating the Gesell Development Schdules (Daly,2004) He was the first to use of motion picture cameras and one-way screens to study the details of children's behavioral responses (Mayes, 2011). The Child from Five to Ten (1946), Youth: The Years from Ten to Sixteen (1956). Infant and Child in the Culture of Today ( 1940) The aim of education should be to promote the total development of each child (Schigoda, n.d.). Gesell believed that adaptive development reflects the child’s ability to integrate all of the areas of growth. (Schigoda,n.d.). Children show their adaptive behavior through their intelligence, memory, and problem-solving skills. (Schigoda,n.d.) Schools should be made to fit children as they are (Schigoda, n.d.).  Teachers need to be knowledgeable about child behavior, developmental learning theory, and curriculum content.(Schigoda,n.d.). Gesell remains an important person in the field of child development, and is recognized for his advances in the methodology of observing and measuring behavior (Daly, 2004).
