  4. Short Answer # 1 LAND USE/URBANIZATION 1. Over the last hundred years the land cover and land use in Audubon, and throughout Southern New Jersey, has greatly changed. A)Explain how land use and land cover have changed in our region over the last century? What impact has that had on the environment in our region? B) Overall, do you think cities have a positive or negative impact on the environment? Support your answer with at least two examples. C) How do you think the negative effects of sprawl could be reduced?

It is estimated that more than 1 billion people do not have access to clean, reliable fresh water sources. a) How is that possible when more than 97% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water? b) Using the concept of watersheds, explain how overfertilization on a farm in Minnesota could affect fish in the Gulf of Mexico. c) List several benefits and costs associated with building a dam.

Our atmosphere is nothing but a thin layer of gases surrounding our planet. a) Explain using at least 3 examples, how our atmosphere makes life on Earth possible. b) Using at least 2 examples, in detail, explain how humans are altering our atmosphere, impacting life on Earth. c) Explain how the element Carbon is responsible for causing the climate on Earth to change. You must include a diagram/drawing to help explain this answer.

Since the industrial revolution, human civilizations have grown wealthier and technologically advanced by using fossil fuels to power our increasing need for energy. a) For coal, oil and natural gas, explain how each is currently used, their advantages and disadvantages. b) Of all the renewable energy sources we studied in class, which one do you think has the most potential to meet our world’s energy needs in the future? Why?
