  2. How many of you love to eat cheese, meat, ice cream or drink milk?Did you ever wonder where these products came from?

  3. Well if you said cattle you’re on the right track. A++

After this lesson you will be able to: • Identify the origin/history of concerning cattle breeds in TX. • Identify physical characteristics and breed characteristics of cattle in TX. • Determine if breeds mentioned are British, American, or Continental • Complete handout and a short quiz at the end of the lesson that relates to breeds traits, and characteristics. • As well as sample products that come from cattle. (ie: McDonalds hamburgers)

  5. What are some breeds of cattle, and where do they originate from. • At this time discuss with your neighbor any relevant information that you know on cattle. (i.e.: Breeds, uses, etc.)

  6. You may ask yourself what is a breed You may ask yourself: what is a breed?

  7. Well I'm so glad you asked! The classic definition of a breed is: animals that, through selection and breeding, have come to resemble one another and pass their traits uniformly to their offspring. SC:www.ansi.okstate.edu/BREEDS/

  8. ? Discuss in your small group and write down what you think a trait is. What traits do you think are important in identifying cattle breeds?

  9. After your in-depth discussion on traits, compare your ideas with the actual definition:A Trait is: a distinguishing characteristic within a specific breed of cattle.

  14. Brahman • Origin: Southern U.S.A • Characteristics: Gray/Red • Most heat resistant breed • Large frame size • Horned or polled* • Light muscled • *Polled: Genetically born without horns.

  15. Beefmaster • Origin: Texas • Characteristics: No color pattern usually red in color • Medium to large frame size • Heavy muscled

  16. Santa Gertrudis • Origin: Texas • Characteristics: Cherry red • Medium to large frame size • Mid-Heavy muscle

  19. Angus • Origin: Aberdeen, Scotland • Characteristics: Black, some have white bellies, polled* • Smooth hair coat • Medium frame size • Heavy muscled • *Polled: genetically born without horns

  20. Hereford • Origin: Herefordshire, England • Characteristics: Light yellow to cherry red with white belly-thick & curly hair coat • Medium frame size • Medium muscled

  21. Shorthorn • Origin: Northern, England • Characteristics: Color varies, mostly roan (red and white color) • Medium to large frame size • Medium muscle

  24. Charolais • Origin: Central France • Characteristics: White to Creamy-some red, thick hair coat • Large frame size • Lean, heavy muscled

  25. Chianina • Origin: West - Central Italy • Characteristics: Off white with black tongue, nose, eyes, & hooves • Large frame size • Long muscled

  26. Limousin • Origin: South Central France • Characteristics: Most commonly red; can be black with lighter eyes & belly • Medium to large frame size, long body • Heavy muscle

  27. Maine Anjou • Origin: Northwest France • Characteristics: Deep red with white markings; most commonly solid black in color • Large frame size • Heavily muscle
