What is the SONCAP Programme? • Verification of product compliance • Ensure that regulated products conform to the Nigerian or other approved international/ national standards • Two mandatory processes to achieve compliance: - Product Certification - SONCAP Certification
Key Programme Benefits • Prevent dangerous or unacceptable goods from entering the country • Increase the level of compliance with Nigerian approved standards • Major benefits in terms of consumer and environmental protection
Safety Non-Compliance Some examples of safety related hazards in products include: • Food processors with inadequate protection from rotating blades • Irons, food processors and light fittings not grounded – electric shock hazard • Accessible live parts in air conditioning systems • Hair dryers smoking due to excessive heat
What are the routes to Product Certification? • There are 2 separate routes to Product Certification • The exporter can select route one if a substantiated declaration (in the form of valid test documentation) can be submitted to the SONCAP Country Office (SONCO) or • If a suitable test report cannot be supplied to the SONCO, the exporter can arrange for testing of the product at a SON approved laboratory
What certificate is issued? • A Product Certificate will be issued to the exporter following successful product review process • The products entered in the product certificate are valid for a maximum period of up to 3 years from the date of issue of the product certificate
What are the requirements of SONCAP • The SONCAP Certificate will be issued on the basis of the final invoice, valid PC and the Request for SONCAP Certification (RFSC) form along with pictures of the regulated products contained in the shipment
How much does it cost? • The product certificate fee is based on a pro-rata structure dependant upon product validity • Detailed information on this can be obtained by contacting the nearest SONCAP Country Office
How much does it cost? • SONCAP Certification fees are as follows: - New SONCAP Certificates = USD 300 per certificate issued - Amendments to certificates = USD 100 per certificate - Duplicates of issued certificates = USD 100 per certificate
