  1. EnerBuild workshop Lyon –24 October 2002 Thematic group 5 : Building Components (including windows and facades) Peter Wouters Belgian Building Research Institute

  2. Research in the seventies till beginning of eighties Energy use for heating in dwellings

  3. Optimisation challenge very simple... Thermal comfort in winter Heating energy Thermal insulation

  4. BUILDING Thermal Comfort Acoustical Comfort ENERGY USERS Air quality Visual comfort INSTALLATIONS

  5. Very important for designing and assessing (innovative)building envelopes

  6. Low heat losses Control of solar gains useful in winter not desirable in summer Contact with outside Minimisation of artificial lighting No glare problems ... Acoustics Additional concerns Pre-heating ventilation air Maintenance Fire regulations esthetics ... Costs Glazing

  7. The availability of energy efficient technology is essential for improving the performances of the building stock...

  8. Innovative glazing systems Evacuated glazing Aerogel glazing

  9. Also attention for source control

  10. Natural andartificiallighting Crucial aspect in design concept

  11. Understanding control of innovative systems.. Intelligent control very important!

  12. In order to achieve quality,it is not sufficient to have good technologyArchitecture is also crucial...

  13. Ionica Offices Cambridge Powergen Coventry Commerzbank Frankfurt Norman Foster

  14. Material technology Projects • Solar Power Envelope • Durable peak performance evacuated glazing • Dynamic building energy performance assessment • Study and evaluation of integrated solar façade • Insulating, light transmitting aerogel glazing • Materials for healthy indoor spaces - MATHIS • Solar building facades • Design study of thermal diode wall • Design of multi-functional ventilated façade • Façade-roof integrated PV (Solar-Collect)

  15. Façade integration Projects • Solar Power Envelope • Durable peak performance evacuated glazing • Dynamic building energy performance assessment • Study and evaluation of integrated solar façade • Insulating, light transmitting aerogel glazing • Materials for healthy indoor spaces - MATHIS • Solar building facades • Design study of thermal diode wall • Design of multi-functional ventilated façade • Façade-roof integrated PV (Solar-Collect)

  16. A very important observation… • For many technological areas, a wide offer of energy efficient technology at competitive prices exist but limited use by market • Creating appropriate market conditions probably in many areas more important than developing new technologies

  17. European Directives Construction Product Directive (1989) Directive on Energy Performance (2002?) CEN (common products) EOTA (innovative products) Member states Obligation to express performances in line with CEN and EOTA procedures Obligation to impose Energy Performance Regulation, energy certification and inspections Intensive, but fragmented national research activities which result in heterogenous market conditions Research at national level for developing procedures No incentive for industry for product optimisation Missing procedures Not sufficiently refined procedures Almost no common procedures at European level

  18. Conclusions • Major developments during 2 last decades • With respect to the needs • Impressive development in technology • Integrated approach far from evident • Indoor climate • Energy use at micro- and macro-scale • Major challenge : • Create appropriate assessment tools (including requirements and implementation of legislation) • A correct implementation of the EPD • An attractive framework for stimulating innovation
