TWO ULTIMATE GOALS IN DEALING WITH NON-ESSENTIALS • FOUR PRINCIPLES to be applied in dealing with non-essentials • Principle #1 [Christ’s Lordship] • Welcome one another without judging others (14:1-12). • Principle #2 [Kingdom of God] • Build one another without stumbling others (14:13-23). • Principle #3 [Christ’s Example of Love/Self-denial] • Please your neighbor in love [15:1-7). • Principle #4 [Christ’s Example of Acceptance/Welcoming] • Rejoice with one another in God’s plan (15:8-13).

  3. TWO ULTIMATE GOALS IN DEALING WITH NON-ESSENTIALS • These four exhortations all point to TWO ULTIMATE GOALS: • That GOD may be glorified by his people (v.9). • That WE may abound in hope by God (v.13). • TODAY’S FOCUS: “How did Christ’s work of accepting us bring glory to God and hope in us?”

HOW DID CHRIST’S WORK BRING GLORY TO GOD AND HOPE IN US? 1) Christ brought glory to God through showing God’s truthfulness to the Jews. 7Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. 8For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,  (vs.7-8)

HOW DID CHRIST’S WORK BRING GLORY TO GOD AND HOPE IN US? 1) Christ brought glory to God through showing God’s truthfulness to the Jews. • Paul’s concluding charge: “Welcome one another in full acceptance and love!” Why? Because Christ has welcomed you—for the glory of God. • How did Christ accept us? First, he became a servant to the Jews to show God’s truthfulness (incarnation/obedience to the cross). • How did Christ show God’s truthfulness to the Jews? His saving work for the Jews has confirmed the promises made to the patriarchs—Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob.

HOW DID CHRIST’S WORK BRING GLORY TO GOD AND HOPE IN US? 2) Christ brought us hope through showing God’s mercy to the gentiles. 8For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,  9and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name." (vs. 8-9)

HOW DID CHRIST’S WORK BRING GLORY TO GOD AND HOPE IN US? 2) Christ brought us hope through showing God’s mercy to the gentiles. • The Abrahamic covenant of God included the Gentiles in God’s plan of salvation along with the Jews. • Christ showed God’s mercy to the Gentiles through his saving work of including all who believe in him. • Therefore, Christ became the basis of our hope for God’s salvation. Why? So that the Gentiles might glorify God! All hope of which [God] is not the author, in the heart of men, is false and delusive. The world in general may have hope, but it is false hope. All true hope with respect to the Divine favor is effected in the human heart by God Himself. Charles Hodge

  8. HOW DID CHRIST’S WORK BRING GLORY TO GOD AND HOPE IN US? 3) Christ brought glory to God through welcoming us as one people of God. 10And again it is said, "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people." 11And again, "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol him." (vs.10-11)

HOW DID CHRIST’S WORK BRING GLORY TO GOD AND HOPE IN US? 3) Christ brought glory to God through welcoming us as one people of God. • Because of the hope Christ brought to us [the Gentiles] through God’s mercy, we now can rejoice with God’s people for salvation together. • Christ welcomed the Gentiles [“not My people”] into God’s people [“My people”]. • This is the GRAND VISION of God’s plan of salvation & the church: welcoming all peoples into ONE IN CHRIST so that all nations/peoples may bring glory to God as they rejoice togetrher.

  10. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise. Galatians 3-28-29

HOW DID CHRIST’S WORK BRING GLORY TO GOD AND HOPE IN US? 4) Christ can bring the overflowing hope through the power of the Spirit. 12The root of Jesse will come,   even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;in him will the Gentiles hope." 13May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (vs.12-13)

HOW DID CHRIST’S WORK BRING GLORY TO GOD AND HOPE IN US? 4) Christ can bring the overflowing hope through the power of the Spirit. • The root of Jesse = [Son of David, the Messiah] = Christ. • God’s promise is this: In Christ the Gentiles will hope as the basis of constant hope for the ultimate reality [the consummation of our full salvation]. The focus of this hope is in the anticipation of the glory of God (Rom 5:2) which we will share as co-heirs with Christ! • The God of hope desires us to be filled with hope in Christ. How? The key is not in mere doing but believing and acting on the faith in the power of the Holy Spirit!

  13. What Unlocks the Power of the Holy Spirit? Oftentimes people come to me, and say, “What is the matter with my Christian life? I have come to a plateau where I seem to be so bored, and nothing interesting is happening, and I have lost all vision and joy and victory in my life. It seems to be so dull and lifeless. What can I do?" For years I think I gave a wrong answer to that. I said to them, "What you need is time for prayer and reading the Scriptures—prayer and the Bible." But I have come to see that this isn't the answer. What they need is to believe what they read in Scripture, and believe what they pray—that is the answer. These other things are merely mechanics which make possible the believing, but believing is the real answer. It isn't Bible reading, or prayer, or Christian fellowship that unlocks the power of the Holy Spirit. It is BELIEVING what you read or what you pray. . . It is when we believe and act that the power of the Holy Spirit begins to work through us and causes us to abound in hope—for all around us are the evidences that God is at work accomplishing his purposes in our lives. - Ray Stedman

  14. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS FOR OUR EVERYDAY LIFE 1. Praise God for SHOWING GOD’S MERCY TO YOU through the acceptance of Christ. • Knowing that Christ welcomed you to God’s people. • Realizing how you also ought to welcome others in full acceptance. 2. Rejoice with God’s people IN GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION. • See the BIG PICTURE of God’s plan for salvation and the church. • Envision God-centered worship through this BIG PICTURE. 3. BELIEVE AND LIVE BY FAITH in the power of the Spirit so that you may overflow with hope in God. • Believe what you read in Scripture and what you pray! • Be filled with all joy, peace and abounding hope!
