  2. What did the Liberals do? National Insurance (Part 1) Fund into which worker, employer and state paid and could be claimed should the worker fall ill and be unable to work •  • £ too little. Did not provide for family. • Only paid out for 26 wks – could quickly sink into poverty. • NI contributions reduced workers wages. •  • Stopped workers from immediately falling into poverty – helped 13mln • Gave 26 wks of sick pay. 50p first 13 wks and 25p for final 13. • Provided safety net

  3. What did the Liberals do? Trades Board Act 1909 Agreed working conditions & established minimum wage for those in sweated industries. •  • Ignored workers in other industries • Missed opportunity to create universal minimum wage – didn’t happen until 1997! •  • Helped 37,000 workers • These people worked in worst conditions.
