  2. True or False? Districts haven’t seen the STAAR tests yet. TRUE But. . . we haven’t ever seen the tests before they’re administered. Sample tests will be released this summer. Texas Education Agency

  3. True or False? We’ll receive student results before the end of the school year. TRUE According to the TEA calendar of events, districts and parents will be notified by May 31, 2013. Texas Education Agency

  4. True or False? Test prep materials have been proven to increase scores on STAAR. FALSE No product has been shown to increase scores on STAAR because we only have one year of data. The only guaranteed preparation for success is strong instruction in the TEKS. Texas Education Agency

  5. True or False? STAAR is going to be really, really hard. FALSE STAAR will be more rigorous than TAKS, but content is 100% tied to the required curriculum, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Texas Education Agency

Reading & Writing Updates • Allowable space to write compositions and short-answer reading responses • 26 lines for written compositions • Dictionaries must be available to all students taking • STAAR reading assessments at grades 6–8 and STAAR Writing in grade 7 • 4-hour time limit (especially as it relates to compositions and short-answer reading responses) • Use of different type of scoring (adjacent) for written compositions 13

  13. Math and Science Paper tests will have blank space around test questions for students to make notes/perform calculations. Math tests will have graph paper embedded in the paper test booklets - perforated to tear out. Calculators will be provided for the Algebra I test. 75%-87% of math test questions will involve process skills. 43%-66% of science test questions will involve process skills. 16

(8th grade) • Items requier multi-step thinking and understanding, rather than memorization • Students expected to recognize time-period specific language • No negative stem items (not, except, etc.) • Grade 8

Optional Test Administration Procedures & Materials For ALL students. . . • Includes some things that have been called testing accommodations in previous years (highlighters, scratch paper, etc.) • Available to any student who needs them • Not intended for every student in a class or disability category

Who can receive accommodations due to a disability? • For purposes of statewide assessments, a student needing accommodations due to a disability includes . . . • A student with an identified disability who receives special education services and meets established eligibility criteria for certain accommodations • A student with an identified disability who receives Section 504 services and meets established eligibility criteria for certain accommodations • A student with a disabling condition who does not receive special education or Section 504 services but meets established eligibility criteria for certain accommodations (extremely rare cases)

What are Accommodations for Students with Disabilities? • Changes to instructional materials, procedures, or techniques • Made on an individual basis and allow a student with a disability to participate in grade-level instruction and testing • Should be evaluated regularly to determine effectiveness • Not changes to the content being assessed • Should not replace the teaching of knowledge and skills as outlined in the TEKS • Not for a “group” of students Have to be used Routinely, Independently, and Effectively . . .

An alternate assessment based on modified academic achievement standards • Different passing standard than STAAR • Different test questions… based on STAAR For students receiving special education services who meet participation requirements • Enrolled in grades 3-12

How is STAAR-M Different? • Fewer questions and answer choices • eliminate field test items and negative stems (not ?s) • reduce the number of writing prompts • Simplified sentences, vocabulary, & grids • Revised or extra words for clarification • Deleted extra information • Organized information differently

How can I help my child? • Discuss what your child learns each day • Review homework with them – discuss vocabulary and concepts • Use our on-line resources for an occasional review • Communicate with your child’s teacher • Remain calm • Make sure they are eating healthy foods and getting enough sleep • Assure them that you will be proud, as long as they do their best

  26. A few final thoughts Change is scary, but . . .we’ve done this before! We have amazing students, parents, and teachers in Sunnyvale! We are up for the challenge! And . . . your child’s future is not dependent upon successful test performance.
