Basically, you have to summarize this person’s life. It is sort of like a timeline. You need to find what makes this person unique or successful and condense it all down into one descriptive paragraph.

He played 18 seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates. 3. WHEN? He was born August 18th, 1934. 4. WHERE? He was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico. 5. WHY? He was famous for being a baseball star. He was known for overcoming the difficulties of racial tension. He was known for his charity work. 6. HOW? Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash in 1972. Remember to combine sentences when necessary!

  6. First Paragraph: Roberto Clemente Roberto Clemente was a famous baseball player and humanitarian. He was born August 18th, 1934 in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Roberto’s accomplishments came on and off the field. While being a star baseball player, he had to overcome the difficulties of racial tension and in doing so, was an inspiration for all Latin Americans. He was a man who always wanted to help people in need in any way that he could. Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash in 1972 while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Roberto Clemente experienced racial tension. Who? Racial Tension came from local media and from his teammates. Example Some newspapers called him a “Puerto Rican Hot Dog.” How? Roberto continued to stay positive. Example He was noted saying that he didn’t believe in color. 2. Tragic Death What? There was a massive earthquake in Nicaragua. What? Roberto sent three planes of first aid, but they never arrived. What? Roberto decided to personally take a 4th plane. What? The plane crashed shortly after take off. There is no specific outline format for the second paragraph, but You should always give supporting details, examples, and remember To make sure the events are listed in the order in which they occur.

  9. 2nd Paragraph: Clemente At the beginning of Roberto’s career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he had experienced lots of racial tension coming from his teammates and from local media. Some newspapers called him a “Puerto Rican Hot Dog,” and others would even make fun of how he talked. Even with all the negativity surrounding him everyday, he continued to stay positive and on many different occasions was noted saying that he didn’t believe in color. Roberto wanted to be remembered as a player who gave all he had to give in every aspect of his life. When a massive earthquake hit Nicaragua, Clemente immediately gathered aid packages and sent three planes to deliver the relief to the people. The packages never arrived! They were stolen by corrupt government officials. Clemente decided to personally deliver a fourth relief flight. The plane crashed immediately after take off and Clemente’s body was never recovered.

Every year, Major League Baseball honors an individual player with the Roberto Clemente Award. This award recognizes those who have followed in Clemente’s footsteps as a humanitarian. Throughout the world, countless schools, stadiums, parks, buildings and streets are named after him. Clemente has and always will be considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time, and has been my hero since I was ten years old.
